South Carolina picked up another piece on the interior of the defensive line on Sunday night with the pledge of in-state product Demetrius Watson out of Fort Dorchester.

Watson's been on the radar for some time, since he picked up a scholarship offer on the strength of a standout camp performance back in June. He worked out with defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey and impressed to where the Gamecocks pulled the trigger. Since that time, Watson's been in no rush to jump into a choice, and the Gamecock staff continued communication.

The Lowcountry lineman has continued to progress; he went into the season at 285 pounds and, according to multiple folks I've spoken with, has played well this year. He's athletic enough to where he plays on the outside in Fort D's defensive scheme.

He's a quick scouting report from a knowledgeable source out of the Lowcountry who sees Watson on the regular:

"He plays a little high at times, but he can get away with it at the high school level. Very fast - 4.8 forty - for his size. He's a very good pass rusher with a very quick first step."

Carolina picked up summer pledges from two defensive tackles in Jamaal Whyce and Felix Hixon and the staff's wanted to add another one or two to that tally. Watson's a quality pickup from within the state, a kid that doesn't have a huge offer list (Arizona State, Georgia Tech, Syracuse) but is one of those that you could look back on in three or four years and wonder why he's not wearing Garnet and Black had the staff not jumped in and pushed to land him. He has intriguing size and physical traits.
