Inside the commitment: Lovasea Carroll

Once Lovasea Carroll hit the transfer portal, South Carolina was a natural fit for the former Georgia defensive back/running back who was, of course, at one time committed to the Gamecocks.

Carroll was indeed the first #WelcomeHome that Shane Beamer put out last week.

Carroll has family in South Carolina and will get the opportunity to play running back in Columbia after being quickly shifted to the secondary at UGA.

The Gamecocks, of course, already added one running back from the portal in Christian Beal-Smith and were hoping to add another with the loss of both Kevin Harris and ZaQuandre White from last year's team.

While Beal-Smith has just one season left, from an eligibility standpoint adding Carroll is similar to adding a high school prospect.

Carroll played in four games last season but was able to maintain his redshirt status and thus still has four years of eligibility at South Carolina.

The first thing that stands out about the 6-foot-1, 195-pound Carroll is his speed. Carroll is a big play waiting to happen every time he touches the ball as he has effortless speed along with good feet and an ability to run to daylight as you'll see in his senior film from IMG below. I like his vision and see him as more than just a speed guy playing RB and think he's got the frame to continue to add some muscle mass as well.

Despite splitting time in what is an always loaded IMG backfield, Carroll was the second-leading rusher there as a senior when he split time with blue chip Penn State signee Kaytron Allen and rushed for 464 yards and seven touchdowns on just 42 carries while grabbing nine receptions for 92 yards.

One source pointed out to me that Carroll also has strong ball skills, which is probably why UGA was intrigued by using him at defensive back, and is the type of running back that can catch the football out of the backfield and be split out wide.

When Chris Clark and I watched Carroll at Carolina's camp a couple of summers ago, he appeared to be a smooth route runner and have soft hands as he caught passes from his friend and now teammate, Colten Gauthier.

Carroll is already enrolled and moved in at South Carolina and will go through spring practice with the Gamecocks where he'll join a backfield that will have some very intriguing options for running backs coach Montario Hardesty.

The Gamecocks now have two spots left for the class of 2022.
