Gamecocks Earn 1-1 Draw With Chanticleers
CONWAY, S.C. – The South Carolina men’s soccer team picked up a point in the Sun Belt Conference standings Friday night (Oct. 14), as the Gamecocks earned a 1-1 draw at Coastal Carolina. The Gamecocks not stand at 5-4-3 on the year and 1-1-2 in the conference.
It was a defensive battle in the first half as both sides limited the quality shot opportunities. The lone shot on goal came by the Chanticleers in the 14th minute that goalkeeper Ben Alexander was able to knock away. Alexander finished with three saves in the match.
The Gamecock’s first shot on goal came off the foot of Adam Luckhurst a minute into the second half. Ten minutes in, the Chanticleers scored off a set piece from a throw in to take an early lead.
South Carolina responded in the 71st minute on Peter Clement’s first goal of the season. Will Crain sent a long ball across the middle. Luckhurst was able to deflect the ball at the top of the box to a wide open Clement on the right side, who beat the Coastal keeper to the far side. It was Clement’s eighth goal of his career. The assist was Crain’s second of the year, while Luckhurst added to his team lead with his fourth.
The Gamecocks return to action at Old Dominion October 19 for a 7 p.m. match.

NASHVILLE, TN – The No. 24 women’s soccer team fell on the road to Vanderbilt Friday, 1-2. The Gamecocks now move to 4-3-0 in conference play.
After the start of the second half, 5th year Jyllissa Harris moved her way into the No. 1 spot in the NCAA Women’s Soccer record books for all-time minutes, surpassing Virginia’s Becky Sauerbrunn at 8,523 minutes played. Harris additionally sits atop the South Carolina record book for total starts (95), and third overall for total games (98). This also places her at No. 5 in the nation for total games played.
Breaking Down the Action
The first half was relatively quiet on both sides, with South Carolina putting up three shots to Vanderbilt’s two. Each team recorded three corners in the first 45, and one shot on goal.
The second half saw more action, with the Gamecocks more than tripling their shots from the first period. In the 73rd minute of play, a pass from Micah Bryant on the right side up to fellow freshman Shae O’Rourke allowed her to find the back of the net and put South Carolina up 1-0.
Less than two minutes later, a foul on senior Camryn Dixon in the box set up a penalty kick for the Commodores, where they were able to capitalize and tie things at 1-1. Five minutes after the goal, Vanderbilt was able to find success once again in the 78th minute to put themselves on top 2-1.
