Torrian Gray is expected to be in Columbia today (Tuesday) for his first official day on the job after confirmation came down on Monday night that he was a definite add to Shane Beamer’s first staff as a defensive backs coach.

One question that many have relates to the type of impact that Gray could have on the recruiting front.

An obvious name to watch there is four-star defensive back Sam McCall, ranked by Rivals.com as the country’s 37th-best prospect regardless of position. He was formerly committed to Florida, but backed off that pledge once it was revealed that Gray was not going to be back in Gainesville next season.

The 6-foot-3, 189-pounder has said previously that Gray is “like part of his family” and has cited a very high level of trust with him. There will continue to be a high level of competition for McCall from programs like Alabama, Florida, and FSU, but here’s to thinking that Gray is going to have McCall seriously thinking about Columbia sooner than later.

McCall’s teammate at Lakeland (Florida) Lake Gibson, Jyvonte McClendon, is another defensive back out of the Sunshine State that Gray carries a quality bond with on the recruiting trail.

The 6-foot-2, 176-pounder has remained open throughout the process, but it’s clear that McCall’s commitment to the Gators and Gray’s involvement had UF in a solid position. Those familiar with Gray’s efforts in the state of Florida believe that McClendon is another that he could circle as a target for South Carolina.

2022 five-star defensive back Jaheim Singletary committed to Ohio State shortly after Gray’s defection from Florida, but also has a quality relationship with Gray. While he would certainly qualify as a tough pull as this juncture, he’s someone that Gray could feasibly get to take a second look at the Gamecocks.
