*** It was easy to spot 2023 quarterback Dylan Lonergan once he walked through the front doors of the Jerri and Steve Spurrier Indoor Practice Facility.

Lonergan was greeted by area recruiter Erik Kimrey as well as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Marcus Satterfield, making some rounds inside prior to shuttling off for a campus tour.

The Peach State standout later returned to the indoor, where Satterfield put him through the paces of several footwork and throwing drills. Whether it was in that setting or the one-on-ones later, Lonergan impressed with his throwing motion, accuracy, and arm strength.

He entered as the day's most anticipated camp workout, and certainly did not disappoint on that front.

*** Speaking of the indoor facility, the only banners that remained up inside were those of former Gamecock greats Sterling Sharpe, Mike Johnson, George Rogers, and Steve Wadiak. Looks like new banners are on the way for other areas.

*** One unexpected visitor on the day was Hammond's CJ Stokes, who did not work out but spent plenty of time with the coaching staff. Mike Peterson, was a key component of Jordan Burch's recruitment out of Hammond during the 2020 cycle, made time to speak with him first, as did Stokes' former high school head coach, Erik Kimrey.

Shane Beamer also stood by Stokes at midfield for quite some time and chatted with him.

There's a full summer slate already for Stokes, who's taking official visits to Vanderbilt (June 4), Missouri (June 11), Michigan (June 18), plus unofficial trips to Clemson (June 9), Louisville (June 25), and Minnesota (July 31). Another trip to Penn State could also happen.

- One prospect from the 2023 class we have had circled due to position and proximity is Chris Lawson, who recently moved back to Columbia from the Charlotte area.

Receivers coach Justin Stepp made a concerted effort to find Lawson early in the camp and watched closely as the Ridge View rising junior went through drills. South Carolina will be a factor here, assuming the push is there.

*** Stepp had a couple other receivers from the Palmetto State to watch, too. While Dutch Fork star Antonio Williams is going to be in town on Friday to check out Columbia for the first time under the new staff, his Silver Foxes teammate, Nick Sowell, was on hand. He's a physically impressive prospect that turned in a nice showing.

One of the most intriguing performances on the day was turned in by Clarendon Hall’s Kylic Horton, who plays quarterback, wide receiver, and defensive back at the 8 man level in high school.

A few Gamecock staffers were observed with raised eyebrows after Horton ran the 40, and Stepp was paying close attention as Horton went through drills. He's a 2022 prospect and plays 8 man (in addition to being a solid hoops player) so there's not a lot of buzz, but that could change this summer.

** West Florence tight end Avion McBride looked the part physically. He may not have turned in a stellar 40 time based on what we heard, but he's a guy that's going to play Division I football, at least Group of 5 (already has a Georgia State offer and drawing Duke interest).

We were told that another West Florence product, 2024 DB Kelvin Hunter, ran in the 4.5 range twice.

*** Another in-state prospect that worked out at tight end was Greenville's Josh Sapp, son of former Clemson quarterback Patrick Sapp.

He turned in one of the most solid performances we saw all day, moving well and catching everything thrown at him during drill work.

*** Alabama linebacker Karmelo Overton, who sports one of the best personalities among 2023 prospects we have covered, also made the trip as planned and worked out with the staff.

Clayton White spent time with him both before and during camp.

*** We also saw White interacting during camp with Deerfield Beach four-star LB Jayvant Brown, who was in town with DT Alton Tarber, RB Jaziun Patterson, and others from Deerfield Beach.

*** Every year at camp, there are multiple occasions in which a prospect shows up we don't immediately recognize, with a scramble to figure out just who he is.

The candidate on day one was Ohio's Joshua Lukusa, who was in town with a large group from the state.

Cincinnati and Illinois have stepped forward with offers, the latter coming literally was camp was going on. We observed defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey and edge assistant Mike Peterson speaking with Lukusa during camp. He brought a nice blend of length and athleticism and is one we'll be watching.

The group from Ohio also included 6-foot-4 linebacker Adam Trick from the 2022 class, a prospect defensive coordinator Clayton White pulled out of drills to speak with toward the end of camp.

*** Beaufort's Eamon Smalls has been on the radar of GamecockCentral.com subscribers for some time, as he has been mentioned in multiple past reports and carried an offer from the previous staff in Columbia.

As Wes Mitchell mentioned in the camp updates thread, Smalls is an interesting prospect because of his sheer size coupled with his ability to move. He's still raw, but nonetheless a guy that is always worth keeping an eye on.
