*** Looking back at Tuesday – the first official day of the NCAA’s open period – the Gamecock staff hosted a few visitors of interest.

Hevin Brown-Shuler, the 2024 Atlanta defensive tackle who’s originally from Columbia, was one. Shane Beamer gave him an indirect social media shoutout earlier in the day when he mentioned via Twitter that one of the nation’s top players was in town and had called to say he was stopping by.

Brown-Shuler posted a video of him working out with former Gamecock/NFL defender Corey Miller, and he stopped over on campus to meet with the staff as well.

It’s early for Brown-Shuler, whose early offer list indicates a potential national-level recruitment. This brand new staff opened June needing to use every minute of the month to lay the groundwork with prospects from multiple classes, given the circumstances. This is an example of one in which South Carolina’s done just that.

We have not yet caught up with Carson Black, the Fort Mill product that picked up a Gamecock offer earlier this spring, but will make efforts to do so as soon as possible to get his thoughts on the visit.

As for South Pointe DB Quan Peterson, he visited and conducted a workout with defensive backs coach Torrian Gray. Based on feedback from Peterson himself as well as a source close to him, it seems that the 40 time he ran during testing was not where he would have preferred.

South Carolina relayed to Peterson that the staff liked his movement during drills, and will be continuing to track him throughout the month of June.

*** As a reminder, South Carolina has a key visitor from the class of 2023 coming in on Wednesday for an unofficial visit in Georgia’s Lawson Luckie. It’s going to be a lighter day in terms of visitor numbers, with things really kicking up on Thursday, which coincides with the first day of camp. Luckie, despite being 6-foot-3, sports a 79-inch wingspan and is a prospect that South Carolina’s staff is going to recruit hard in that class. This will be his first trip to Columbia.

*** Let’s stick with the tight end position for 2022 as we look forward to Thursday’s slate of visitors and campers. As we have outlined, South Carolina’s priority at tight end has and will be four-star Oscar Delp, who will make his official visit to Columbia later in the month.

There is an in-state prospect that South Carolina’s keeping an eye on as well. West Florence’s Avion McBride is going into his first season playing the position, as the 6-foot-6, 215-pounder previously played wide out for his high school team.

Georgia State has already dispensed an offer, and camp stops to South Carolina (Thursday) and Duke are also lined up. McBride hows ample physical upside as a blocker and potential pass-catcher. It will be quite interesting to see how he tests and performs in drill work during his camp stops, as more offers could come his way this summer – and into the season once he can put down some tape at his new position.

*** One of the most significant names that will be coming through Columbia on Thursday is Georgia quarterback Dylan Lonergan.

Also a standout baseball player with some pro potential, Lonergan appears to really be set on playing football at the college level.

South Carolina appears to be in a position of competitiveness early, with North Carolina representing another program that he likes at this juncture.

Lonergan is set to not only visit, but also work out in camp with offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Marcus Satterfield for the first time.
