There were actually several reasons why Rich Rodriguez was never going to be South Carolina's new head football coach.

But only one bears mentioning at this point and it pretty much says it all: He was not offered the Carolina job and yet his A.D. is announcing that Rodriguez told him he turned it down to stay out west. That's characteristic of Rich Rodriguez and tells you all you need to know as to why he is not real popular amongst his fellow coaches. And disrespecting both Ray Tanner and the University of South Carolina by making up a story like this will not increase his popularity. Tanner carries a lot of respect amongst coaches and administrators. Rodriguez does not. And he didn't better his situation with this episode.

He doesn't have the character to work for Ray Tanner and Ray Tanner knows it. We all know it. Tanner has been straight-up with every coach he's talked to or had an emissary talk to. To my knowledge, every coach has been as straight-up as he could be with Tanner. Except for one. I doubt Tanner answers any questions about this issue. Until a fellow SEC AD calls him and asks him what he thinks of Rich Rodriguez.

Bring on Will Muschamp. Help him get the staff he needs. Get them on the road. It's time to move on and rebuild this program. We owe that to the players already here and the ones yet to come.
