Seven SEC teams ranked ahead of us as well. This is not how you win SEC Championships.

I don't care about the "we don't look at stars, we evaluate" or "I only want players that want to be Gamecocks" crap. We have to get better at recruiting.

Maybe you need to look back at our classes and how we had 11-2 seasons x 3...

Let me see... Fla when 11-2 a couple years back, along with Miss St, UGA, Mizzou, LSU, Bama, Auburn, Ole Miss, won 11+ games and didn't win the Championship...

And the SEC Championship winners typically have top ranked recruiting classes.

Why are "fans" getting so worked up about what we are ranked in recruiting? Am I missing somewhere in the playoff format where the top ranked classes are automatically in the playoffs or playing for the conference titles? Yes, having the "stars" will help you get there, we had two five stars recently (Latti, Clowney) and what did we do with them in terms of championships?

High School kids still have to develop in college. They have to get in a weight program, learn better techniques, adjust to the speed of the game. Yes, some can do it quicker than others, but when we were going 11-2, we didn't have the best classes then either. It takes most a year to adjust, hence the reason why they redshirt so many guys.

RELAX!!! A 19th ranked class doesn't automatically mean the sky is falling.

Don't be obtuse. Higher ranked recruiting classes generally correlates with getting better players, who have higher ceilings in college, which means your team will be better.

The 4 teams in this year were CFB blue-bloods, and all recruit impressively.

One thing you're overlooking is that we had the 19th ranked class with 30 recruits. That's not a very good overall ranking given how many recruits we signed. In the years we ranked 24th we only signed 23 kids (and one of those years we signed a 5 star).

Bottom line is this class plummeted - primarily because of the refusal to make changes on the D and analyze how poorly our coaches were actually doing with developing the talent we had. A 7-6 season really hurt us because 1) We have no "tradition of winning" to fall back on and 2) When it counted, Spurrier said "2-3 years" versus firing the ineffective coaches on his staff and going after some high-profile hires.

Alabama recruits well and is coached well.

Teams that typically recruit better than us (Georgia, Florida), we have beaten them more often than not the past few years. Clemson has outrecruited us 6 years straight, so you will take their recruiting ranking over the W/L record that's earned on the field?

I agree with you that better recruiting typically means better players, but not always. If you think so, ask Texas, Southern Cal, Miami and Oklahoma (just to name a few) how their recruiting translates to the field.

It is apparent that the OP can only see one side of the argument. Period.

If I can ask the OP this question... What ranking would be satisfactory for you? What would have made you feel okay with the this class? If we would have kept Fields, Palmer, Key, Durant, and co. we would have been ranked 12/13. What would you have said to this?! Would we automatically win the SEC East with the addition of these few guys?

Gamecawks, since I cannot say to you what I would really like to say (for fear of getting blacklisted), I will just recommend you go and become a fan of the 18 teams ahead of us in recruiting this year. In other words, please go get a life!!!!

COMMON SENSE ALERT- COMMON SENSE ALERT

Fans aren't upset with a 19th ranked class.

They are upset- those that are- that this could have very easily been a top 10-12 class. It was at one time not too long ago a top 6 class.

But some really silly and unnecessary comments from Steve Spurrier- and a lack of urgency in calming some recruits down led to a high number of kid dropping South Carolina.

Can you tell me what the difference in the 19th ranked class and a 10-12 ranked class is? What does it mean in terms of Wins? SEC Titles? Playoffs?

When you have thirty guys committed that early in the game, you will lose some. No we didn't think it would be nine, but some were going to leave. Our class ranking was skewed because so many other schools hadn't received their commitments yet. (UCLA,GEORGIA,USCw)

Spurrier lost elite recruits the staff had spent significant time on. When that happens, you're not going to feel great about a class. Key, Fields, Palmer, etc. weren't long-shot guys the staffed hoped to land. These were guys they were working on for years... especially Key and Fields. That is a gut punch.

That said, if you have a class that might produce at least one elite DE, one elite offensive tackle and depth all over the field, you can't feel too bad. South Carolina is never going to recruit with UGA, Auburn, Alabama, etc. I'm not sure what the heck is happening with Clemson, they are recruiting out of their minds.

It's not just about this one class. Not cracking the top ten in recruiting in several years is a big problem for us no matter how you slice it. Like that OP said, you can't compete for championships like that and that is what our goal here is.

So, option #1: wishing we had more success with recruiting OR
option #2: go be a fan of another team

That seems a bit limited and closed minded.

ONLY OPTION: Coaches do a better job or they can hit the road and we give someone else a shot.

Not to add fuel to the fire but we haven't actually won a bunch of titles at Carolina. You can say that rankings play a part in the preparing for a championship, but it is

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT. WHAT YOU DO WITH THE ONES YOU GET ON CAMPUS.

If wins were solely based on the rankings, SoCal, Clemson, UCLA, LSU would win the national championship every year. When is the last time one of these won the national title?

I was looking at the individual players and their strengths and what they bring to the table. I still feel good about this class regardless of a 19th ranking. The kids that decommitted were never really ours anyway. Key is great, but the drama and self-centeredness he would bring could be a headache for years. Hoke coming in will take the defense to a new level of play and 4th quarter collapses will not be acceptable. Taking time off on any play will put you on the bench. Team chemistry looks good and these recruits want to be GAMECOCKS and are proud to don the Garnet and Black. I can't wait til the opening game to see some of the old studs and some of these new studs play a game that we will appreciate.

This is a simple question. Would you RATHER have a top 5 recruiting class or a class outside of the top 15?

Don't give me that, 'we're never going to be able to recruit like Bama, Georgia and LSU!' There is no good reason that klempsun can pull in a top 5 class and we can't.

We've done it the past. Mississippi got some no name coached named Hugh Freeze or something and he got a top 5 class and turned the team around. So yeah, the "we can't hang with the likes of Bama recruiting talk" is nothing but excuses. The bottom line is other teams have better recruiters than we do and if we had better recruiters than we could hang with those teams.

You can find any stats to fit your arguments regarding recruiting. For those that want to site "winners" with average recruiting, take TCU. For the others, you can site Alabama.
The facts are champions rosters (look at Ohio st, FSU, Alabama, etc) are filled with great recruiting classes for back to back to back to back years. The Tebow UF teams were no different.
So if we expect to win the SEC or more, we have to have at least Top 15 classes over and over again. 11-2 were not "championship years". Didn't even win the conference division.
And a key to those classes dictates you have a great QB. Without that, you don't win.
SOS has NOT proven he can recruit or coach a QB to lead us to that level IMO.
RECRUITING is the beginning and lifeblood of a great program. Period!

Ole Miss had one Top 10 Class. They went from #40 in 2012 to #7 in 2013 to #19 in 2014 to #21 in 2015. They didn't exactly cash in on the season that they had this season.

For a program that has exhibited some uncertainty, hesitant change and even confusion - a Top 20 finish in recruiting is not bad at all.

As far as Clemson's success in recruiting this year, they just were more aggressive in Florida and winning the Orange Bowl last year possibly helped. Clemson usually has a Top 10-15 class, but for them to have a really good haul they rely on talent from Florida.
