My sister's 2015 Honda Civic needs a transmission rebuild/replace. She bought the car new from Honda in Myrtle Beach. They're saying $6000 to replace the transmission, however they'll work with her on trading in her car for another late model Civic. Car has 90k miles.

Another nearby transmission place quoted $3250. Another place said they have a used transmission they can swap out for $2000.

Trying to advise her, however none of these options seem very good to me. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance, much appreciated.

If you know anyone that is in some part of the car business have them call a few different junk yards and get prices on there used ones. The lower the miles the more it will cost. Then maybe find a good Honda shop in her area (not the Honda dealership) to have it installed. My guess on the labor should be between $500-$800 range. How many miles is on her car?

See link. I had a 2001 Honda Civic and just bitched, bitched, bitched, until they agreed to cover most of the costs of fixing the transmission. Car only had 75,000 miles. Contact their HQ in California. Of course, they never admitted that they had a problem with the Civic but did with the Accord. Have never bought another Honda.

Assuming that's a regular Civic with a 1.8 engine, not a hybrid etc, you can get a used transmission with less than 90k miles for around $400 to $600. You should be able to get it installed for another $400 to $600. So with fluids and taxes I'd expect to pay about $1000 to $1500. Do a search on car-part.com.

I would think finding out WHY the transmission needs to be replaced/repaired would help in deciding how to proceed. If it's something faulty with the transmission, a used one may end up having the exact same problem.

Several years ago, we were referred to Mike Smith's Transmission in Union for a rebuild. He was very reasonably priced.

Thank you for your suggestions and information. She ended up having the used transmission installed for $2000, which includes a one year warranty. She will most likely trade the car in for another brand in the next six months. This was her first Honda. She has little confidence in Honda and no confidence in the local dealer now, based on how they handled this situation.

Mike Smith's Transmission in Union is something I would consider if I lived nearby. I had two roommates from Union while attending USC in the early 90s. Good guys and nice families. I visited Union a couple of times with them. Taking her car to Union is not very convenient for her. So she'll have it fixed near her home.

Sorry I didn't see this earlier. We just had transmission work done at Ancot transmission here in Myrtle Beach on 501. Really pleased with their work, service, turnaround time, and price. If we ever need another transmission done in another car, will use them again.

Have a Nissan Pathfinder which needed a new Transmission and just out of warranty. End up paying around 3K for parts/labor...

I had a Honda Odyssey that became almost undriveable due to "juttering". It felt and sounded awful. I had a couple of people look at it and they were thinking replacement. It wound up being resolved with some sort of software upgrade or patch - I don't know which - and I drove that vehicle without difficulty for several years after that.

We inquired about this, and I did an online recall check at Honda’s website with the VIN. Her car wasn’t included in the recall, which only included Civics manufactured in mid to late 2014. Considering the circumstances, this added to her frustration. Dealer said they wish the recall covered her car, then Honda would pay them to fix it.

I've driven Hondas for the last 25 years or so and had one back in high school, too. No real issues other than transmission on the first one and I was ready to sell anyway after 11 years. The only other car I'd buy would be a Subaru.

I have a 2006 Xterra in the driveway right now I'm going to junk because it has a bad Transmission and radiator. There was a design flaw from the years 2004 - 2008. The best price I got for replacement was $5800 for both. They wouldn't consider replacing with a used because of the design flaw for those years. I have 217,000 miles on it but the engine still runs well and I've never had any issues with it. Sucks to have to junk it because anything I do will be more expensive than the vehicle is worth.

I never had problems with the straight drive Hondas that I have had. Maxim used to be, if it’s US made, get an automatic, if it’s foreign, get a straight drive. Worked for me.

Someone came up with a Radiator bypass which my mechanic also installed during the replacement(wasn't terribly expensive if I recall).. Haven't had any problems with it and this was back in 2016
