They just revised it to a 8.1 from a 8.0

I read somewhere that the waves from the 2004 Sumatra earthquake moved every location on earth at least 1 cm, either up or down.

That's crazy.

The 8.0 was upgraded to a 8.1 and was also much more shallow than the previous 7.4 and 7.3

I just watched something on National Geographic last night and they were discussing earthquakes in New Zealand and how they’re overdue for a big one.

What’s the difference between 8.0 and 8.1? I think it is a very big difference. Every tenth that is registered is like 10x greater than the previous number? Maybe not. Help me.

Good question. I found this explanation.
Because of the logarithmic basis of the scale, each whole number increase in magnitude represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude; as an estimate of energy, each whole number step in the magnitude scale corresponds to the release of about 31 times more energy than the amount associated with the preceding whole number value.

So an 8.1 is 3.1 times stronger than a 8.0. There's the math. Now what does that feel like?

Largest I have felt is a shallow 7.9 in 2002 along the denali fault. Watched my truck rock back and forth in the driveway as if two large individuals were rocking it. Was hard to maintain balance in the house as it had a rolling sensation. Amazingly never lost power or gas service during or after.

One wild thing, this guy who lived on a lake had the entire ice breakup on the lake and the motion deposited all of it in his front yard. There was a pile of ice over 20 feet tall in his yard.
