I don't think that Notre Dame would be the cause of it happening. Much as I despise them, as long as I have been observing them, as far back as the middle 1960s, I have never known them to dodge an opponent. They have always been willing to take on big games, and that includes playing tough games on the road. Being an an independent has something to do with that, but craving the top spot is also a factor.
