And so it begins in Texas

This has the potential to get ugly and messy

Texas lawmakers draft bill to require approval of conference realignment

The problem is the Legislature is not in regular session. So if that bill is for the regular session, it won't even be considered filed until January 10, 2023. If they are trying to file it in the current special session, it isn't on the Governor's call. Thus the Parliamentarian will rule it "not germane". There is a reason all of this blew up when it did, shortly after the end of the regular session. It neutered the power of the Legislature. Only with the Texas Governor's assistance could this bill go anywhere and he is a Texas ex with 50 yard line seats for years. He also has a 55 million dollar political war chest and considered invulnerable politically. So this is all political theatre and won't stop the move. The politics in Oklahoma are completely different and they may have trouble. In Texas this is a done deal.

So the simple question is why are people moving there? Why are they moving to South Dakota and Nevada (both experiencing high growth)? Something is attracting people to those states. You do know these are personal choices most people are making.
The people moving to Nevada are 95% Californians and it is more fleeing California than seeking to live in Nevada. Living in Nevada, they are still within driving distance of friends and relatives in California for birthdays and Christmas, but they avoid California taxes and other problems day-to-day.

Whatever Texas state politics are doing is certainly creating growth and financial opportunities for the state and it's people, that much is obvious. I would assume one in a "mess" would have the opposite effect.
Kinda loose logic that could also be looked at the opposite way. Even though CA's population declined slightly in the latest census for the first time ever (in a global pandemic year) it still has by far the largest population of any state in America so obviously a huge # of Americans choose to live there.

So I assume their lives must suck in California for them to flee it and move somewhere they aren't seeking to live.
The amount of taxes, both state income and property taxes, they would have to pay in California sucks. They can get most of the benefit by living nearby, but not being a resident. North Las Vegas is one of the fastest growing cities in the country due to the influx of elderly Californians. Yet they are still close enough for friends and families birthdays and Christmas. Plus the occasional movie premier or beach visit.

It’s not necessarily a simple question. California still draws a lot of people every year. Most of them are younger with higher education levels and income options and the people that are leaving are older people and those with lower education and income opportunities. California is an expensive place especially for housing but that is in large part due to the desirability of the climate and options of mountains, oceans, etc. As is everywhere higher income and higher desire results in higher costs.

Nevada is facing issues now as housing prices have doubled in recent years in developed communities. The main issue they are facing now though is that as retirees from high income areas are coming in and driving up housing prices the people who live there in their typical low income jobs can’t afford that housing anymore.

Circle of life I guess.

Still defeats your Texas is a mess comment, unless of course you agree California is a bigger mess right?

Remaining in a state is, for most people, a matter of inertia more than choice. I hear a lot of people talk about wanting to live in Colorado or Wyoming. The vast majority of the ones I've known have done nothing about it and never will.

You can't leave rising crime out of the primary reasons why folks are leaving CA...it isn't just taxes. Living in CA is getting less desirable by the day for multiple reasons.

Sounds like they folded, which everyone knew they would. No one leaves the SEC

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - Saturday Texas A&M University President, M. Katherine Banks released a statement regarding the possible expansion of the SEC by adding the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma into the conference.

The last few days have been challenging in many ways, and I recognize that change in college athletics often is unsettling for those who love their institutions. Rest assured, the chancellor, our athletic director, and I, and everyone involved in this matter are focused solely on what is best for Texas A&M University. Since 2011, we have been a proud member of the best intercollegiate athletic conference in history and we look forward to continued success in our SEC partnership for many years to come.

M. Katherine Banks

President, Texas A&M University
