Article from today about Clemson (Tillman Hall)

When fans watch a home football game, then, they’re rooting for a team playing on an actual slave plantation. During “the most exciting 25 seconds in college football,” and following a Clemson tradition, the (mostly black and brown) players run down a hill and onto the playing field, affectionately known as “Death Valley.” At the top of that hill overlooking the stadium is the historic Fort Hill plantation house (open for tours daily), overseeing what appears an awful lot like the exploitation of bodies of color for the entertainment of fans and the financial gain of Calhoun’s former plantation ... on a field, no less.

That might be the biggest pile of crap and far reaching comparison I have ever read. While it may have been a former plantation the whole line about exploitation is a pile of crap. Those kids get free educations, housing, health care, etc for playing on that field. If thats exploitation where can I sign up.

I am for removing some of these statutes and such but I wish the media would take a little break now from South Carolina and go after some stuff of racists in other states.

Yeah, I think I'll take on Texas. I understand that the heroes of The Alamo were actually fighting for the right to own slaves, but Santa Ana and his Mexican government had outlawed the horrid practice in Mexico and intended to to the same north of the Rio Grande. Kind of sheds a dark shadow on Texas 'independence' I think.

The best possible outcome is my personal opinion would be to take down the Ben Tillman statue in Columbia and ship it to Clemson where they would want it.

Then replace Tillman's statue that was in Columbia with one in memorial of Senator Pinckney from Marion, SC and all of the deceased from the hate crime in Charleston.

That's deniability right there Shill.

And you know what? You, as a sCUm fan, can't stop that (denying the facts). For if you did, you'd then be accurately referred to as a quitter. Even if you ceased the deniability, and then stopped doing that (i.e. you quit quitting), you'd still be a quitter!

:cool::D

Say what you want SHill, but that was one of your own, a grad student at CU. He took the time to educate himself on everything that he wrote, which is more than I can say for many CU fans. They'd rather not know anything about Tillman and remain in denial. That's what the article is about.

I just wonder what their African American football players think of their decision now, to play at tillman university, built on land that was once a slave plantation?
I wonder how black Americans feel when they look at pictures of the Capital building in Washington DC, built while Lincoln was in the White House. I wonder how they feel about Lincoln's extreme racist views, since, his entire life,Lincolns greatest desire was to ship all blacks out of the country.

If you want to know about slavery from the mouths of the slaves themselves, I would suggest you Google the Slave narratives. Read about 30 random interviews.
I guarantee you, you will be positively shocked.

The media has to focus on racial monuments and symbols now. It is the hot topic of the moment. It came up in congressional bills this week. The University of South Carolina has always called for the removal of the flag. It had no say so but now that it comes down it's a positive moving forward. clemsux on the other hand had a direct ability to change the name of Tillman Hall and has steadfastly refused. It will be a forced event if it happens at all and will shroud clemsux in a dark cloud for many years to come regardless of what changes are made or not made. Get ready for the national spotlight on clemsux racial history. You guys can throw in the national championship to the mix...but....that was a black QB and receiver who were the hero's of that event. Not looking good for the genocidal leader and founder of your great university.

Brainwash University will bury this and censor the writer within a matter of hours if it hasn't already. It really is a pretty accurate article. Daboo will be working overtime to whitewash this. This article should be sent to every recruit and high school coach in America and to every news media outlet as well. This would really make them sweat. I know all schools have baggage, especially in the south but BenTillman University takes the cake... no one individual associated with a state university compares to Ben Tillman as for as being a racist and John C Calhoun was pretty bad too. The thing about Clemson is that they ignore the obvious.... just read the article and watch the video.

Yeah yeah yeah. Can we move on to football now? Racist BAD! BAD! but it has always been and always will be and taking down flags and stupid statues won't change things. People don't want race talks they want arguments that's what keeps the fires hot. There are racists in Africa, racist in Europe, and racist hiding under rocks but some think they all live below the Mason Dixon. The real culprits are not in the south anymore anyway Charleston was a prime example after the shooting. Now lets move on because we have concluded that only whites can be racist. We will NEVER gain ground as long as individuals let the Sharptons of the world tell them what they should think. Football can't get here fast enough

We Gamecock fans need to organize a rally on the tater tech campus right in front of tillman hall, and make sure it gets the appropriate attention it deserves!!

Before you do that, you may want to check your OWN history.
You see, USC was established based on a grant fro. Wade Hampton, whose statue is on the State House grounds.
Hampton was believed to be the biggest slaveowner in America when the war started.
This isn't a Clemson issue, bud.
History has been rewritten.
Both sides had slaves.
Everyone on both sides were racists.
But only the South is under attack.

The past can't be escaped or rewritten. The University of South Carolina has always called for the removal of the flag from the state house. clemsux joined it in the last few weeks. We do not have a present day building that is the center piece of our campus named after a racist, genocidal, murderer who not only founded your university but used slave labor to build it. I think your history has a much darker past than ours. It will also play out in the public forum know as the media when it is all said and done. Your true embrace of that horrific time in the present day will be a spotlight event on your campus soon. The media is on a witch hunt and you have a witch !!!!!!!!

Beckham I have no issue with the piece or the writer except the part I quoted. He is welcome to express his thoughts as he chooses BUT there are parts of it that sound like "black power" propaganda to stir up more racial tension which we have an ample supply of right now. There is no way you can compare slavery on a plantation to kids playing football for a free education and a chance at millions in the NFL. That one paragraph just rubbed me the wrong way.

Yeah and the Emancipation Proclamation didn't matter. Just stop.

I think he's using it as a metaphor, not a comparison.

I am more concerned with what people did after the Civil War. Did they lose graciously and change their ways or did they commit further atrocities? If we have to look at Wade Hampton too than so be it. I have no problem with it. It looks like Hampton was a local leader of the "Red Shirts" which sounds a lot like the KKK and these "rifle clubs" that Tillman was involved with. There are 3 wade Hamptons in that line. I one served in the Revolutionary War, one served in the War of 1812, one served in Civil War. If anything is named after the first 2, than I am okay with leaving it, if anything is named after Wade Hampton III, than I would like to see it changed or made a historical site and the University disown it. I think we have a female dorm named Wade Hampton. I don't know which Wade Hampton it was named after. Any statues to Wade Hampton III should be removed or if not, his misdeeds should be added to the statue.

Have you ever read the Emancipation Proclamation? Do you have any idea what it actually says?
I'll bet real money you haven't, or you never would have brought it up.
FYI, with the E.P., Lincoln declared that slaves in the Confederacy- where he had ZERO authority - were free.
However, slavery in Union control- where he could have actually freed slaves- was PROTECTED!!!
Yes!
The Great Emancipator actually freed - NO ONE ! And he actually protected slavery where he could have ended it!!!!

When you actually learn a little history, get back with me, OK.
Go read the EP.
Go read Lincoln's First Inaugural Address.
Then get back to me.

Actually the Red Shirts had thousands of black members.
Google 'Union Leagues' and get back to me.

He proclaimed and than he backed it up by winning. And maybe that didn't free all the slaves right away but it resulted in most of them being free. Your mind is so twisted to trying to deflect the hatred away from the racist southerners that it is disgusting. You can know the entire history of the world, but if you keep missing the point then all that knowledge is going to waste. And you obviously aren't getting the point that most of the rest of the world does.

I don't care how many black people were intimidated into joining the Red Shirts. It's doesn't justify what they did and neither did the rise of the unions leagues that rose up as a response to the KKK by trying to mobilize the black vote.

USC was not founded by a grant from Wade Hampton. USC opened its doors in 1801, before Hampton was born. How dare anyone compare Ben Tillman with one of the South's greatest sons, Wade Hampton, who was a great general, statesman and honorable man. Tillman was a lying, stealing, lynching, black hati0ng, all for himself scoundrel.

It's still not a murdering, genocidal, racial founder. You just don't get it. You have had this Tillman situation brought up time after time. Slaves were responsible for many building across the state. The fact that they were built by slaves is in it self bad enough but clemsux was founded and built by the very man who murdered them and thought and preached genocide. You spin it like you want but Tillman was a racist, murdering, genocidal maniac and you guys still make the building named after him the center piece of your campus.

Does it say anything to refute the fact that Tillman was a murderer, genocidal maniac that founded clemsux and the building named after this maniac is the center piece of your campus and that repeated attempt to change that name have been rejected ? If it says anything about that I will read it...but it is just a diversionary attempt on your part....right ? Right !
