Big crowd at the Columbia airport live (video link )

That's great, I wish there had been even more people to greet them.

I want to say, that after the Gamecock football team defeated ND at ND in '84 there were something like 18,000 at the airport to greet them or maybe near the airport. To get 18,000 in the Columbia Airport would be somewhat of a task.

I was there in 1984 and the crowd was about 5000 or 6000, with the same number after the men's basketball team won at Kentucky to win the SEC regular season championship in 1997. One of the keys too getting a huge crowd out to the airport is timing and an unexpected win in a big game. I expected us to win the SECT this weekend because I knew Tennessee didn't have the depth to win games on 3 straight days. In 1984 we didn't yet know that ND was mediocre when we beat them in South Bend.

That's because the return is no longer "live".

There was a large crowd at the airport when Big George came home after winning the Heisman trophy.

Sniff... So proud. Great group of exuberant fans. Wish I could have

gotten over there.

GOCOCKS! BEATPSU! BEATMIZZOU!

As far as airport crowds go, the crowd to beat all crowds was in 1980 after we beat Michigan in the Big House. I was a kid, but I was there. That was the time where the media was estimating 20,000 or more. The terminal was wall-to-wall people, and there were huge crowds lining the roads to the airport. That's one of those childhood memories that stick with you.

Thanks for the raw link! I loved seeing the airport celebration. I didn't see a picture of President Pastides at the game or airport. Was he there? I know Tanner was at the game and airport. I can't believe knowing that we had a great chance of winning the game that Pastides would not be at the game.

Ray Tanner was there because he's in charge of athletics. Pastides has a few more important things to be concerened with than sports. Being the president of a big university takes up a lot of time. When Carolina is in town, you see him at lots of sporting events. But to go all the way to Arkansas for a basketball game is a bit much.

I don't agree that 'it is a bit much' to expect the President of the University to be at the game...when you are playing for the SEC championship. Just my opinion. I know he is a big sports fan...and does go to a lot of games. Just surprised he wasn't there...knowing we had a 50/50 chance of winning the whole thing!

So WIS-TV doesn't know how to show recorded video of a previous live event? Color me not surprised.
It's on the video page.

I doubt any university president supports his/her athletic programs more than Pastides. If he wasn't there, then it was for a pretty good reason.

When he was at home in New York for Christmas/New Years, and couldn't go to the bowl game, he showed up at the Mason Jar with all of the other NYC Gamecocks to watch the game. That's just who he is. He wants to be around it all of the time.

USC President

I definitely was not putting him down...I think he is a great President. I just figured a President would go to major things....like an SEC championship game when your team is in it. Surprised he didn't go to the bowl game...it seems when a school is asking fans to go to a game like the bowl game to support their school...the President of the University would be there. They have the money to fly to the game and fly home...just my thoughts.
