The Gamecocks had a busy week on the hoops recruiting trail, offering two in-state prospects over the last seven days from the 2021 class with Jacobi Wright picking his Friday before Cesare Edwards earned his Wednesday.
Both are guys who have been on the Gamecocks’ radar for quite some time with Wright coming in campus the first time in October to watch a practice and a football game before making multiple trips to campus this season and building a relationship with the coaching staff.
Bruce Shingler is the assistant who’s been in contact with him the most and the Gamecocks are in the driver’s seat for his services with him telling us the Gamecocks are really separating themselves.
We’ve mentioned it before, but St. John’s and Vanderbilt are two schools who are getting involved right now as well but the Gamecocks have benefitted from building a relationship with him the last year or so.
In terms of who he is as a player, more should come out about him if he ultimately commits to South Carolina, but he’s a prototypical point guard who runs a really good system at Legacy Charter in Greenville.
He can score but he’s also a pretty physical guard for someone who’s not a bigger guy in terms of height (6-foot-1) but knows how to play with pace and knows how to score (17.4 points last season) and hos to get his teammates involved (5.3 assists per game).
As for Edwards, the Gamecocks obviously got to know him a little and saw him play a lot as a freshman and sophomore recruiting his teammate (and now Gamecock) Trae Hannibal at Hartsville High.
His recruitment now that he’s a junior has escalated with the Gamecocks expressing a lot of interest and jumping in with an offer this week after bringing him on campus multiple times over the course of the season.
Right now it’s still pretty early in the process but he’s already gotten offers from Xavier, Clemson, Ole Miss and Florida hopped in the boat with an offer the same day as South Carolina did.
He’s a long, rangy big man who can score (over 15 points per game) and has gotten a lot stronger under the basket as he’s continued to develop by averaging over 12 rebounds this season.
He has the ability to shoot the three although the shot isn’t consistent. He doesn't shoot well
The Gamecocks have now offered three in-state guys with Edwards, Wright and John Butler Jr.
