** The news this past week that former Dorman quarterback Collin Hill will enroll at South Carolina this month wasn't much of a shock as the rumor had been floating around behind the scenes ever since Hill entered the transfer portal and Mike Bobo was named South Carolina's new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. In talking to Hill after the decision, it's clear the respect that Hill has for Bobo both as a man and coach, and he called him one of, if not the, best offensive mind in the country.
Hill will be limited this spring as he comes off ACL surgery, but provides a lot to South Carolina's quarterback room as a tall, big-armed QB with a veteran presence. While the initial sense I got was that Hill was coming in to provide depth to the room, I don't expect Hill to concede anything, and he'll compete for the No. 1 spot.
He's got knowledge of Bobo's system and what he expects from his quarterbacks and has been described to me as a leader, hard-worker and professional. Don't let the fact that he wasn't incredibly highly recruited originally fool you, Hill can make the throws and at the very least I believe he'll push the rest of the quarterback room to be better and should be a positive for the younger guys like Ryan Hilinski, Dakereon Joyner and Luke Doty.
Carolina flirted with Hill out of high school when this staff first took over and wanted him to push the process into February, but he was already committed to Colorado State and Bobo and went ahead and enrolled early there. Now it comes full circle with him returning to the Palmetto State and USC, where his sister attended. I see his addition to the QB room as nothing but a positive.
** Carolina dipped into the CSU transfer well one more time with the addition of fullback Adam Prentice, though it's not yet clear if Prentice is going to be a walk-on or scholarship player at South Carolina.
The addition of Prentice to the roster plus the offer out to Rock Hill High's 2021 tight end Robbie Ouzts gives us a bit of an idea of what to expect from Bobo's offense.
Bobo has always made use of a fullback as at least an option in his offenses and always seems to have an in-line tight end that can block and set the edge.
It appears that will once again be the case at Carolina. Keep in mind that at Colorado State, Bobo used his fullbacks and tight ends as more versatile players, moving them around more like H-backs when they had the skillset to do so, which both Prentice and Outzts may have the ability to do.
Prentice also brings leadership and toughness to the roster. He was named one of 10 accountability team leaders and was also a team captain as a junior and was CSU's 2018 nominee for the Allstate/AFCA Good Works Team.
Prentice had 18 rushing attempts for 65 yards and 18 catches for 115 yards and a touchdown in three seasons at CSU.
** Monday is move-in day for the early enrollees in South Carolina's 2020 class as several freshman Gamecocks are set to arrive on campus. According to USC, the signees expected to enroll early are:
QB Luke Doty
RB MarShawn Lloyd
WR Michael Wyman
OL Trai Jones
OL TyShawn Wannamaker
OL Vershon Lee
OL Jazston Turnetine
LB Mohamed Kaba
DB Dominick Hill
DB O'Donnell Fortune
** Speaking of Kaba, while his senior season was cut short by a knee injury in October, I was told by someone who interacted with him recently that the recovery has gone great and it should have no effect on his 2020 season. I would imagine the staff will be cautious with him this spring, but I'm told he has a great football mind and should be a candidate to pick up the scheme quickly and play as a true freshman.
** South Carolina five-star defensive end commit Jordan Burch competed in the Under Armour All-America game on Thursday and collected six tackles, two for-loss, and a sack. While the game was no doubt a step up in competition for all of the prospects on hand, I was impressed with how Burch affected the game once he settled into it.
He chased down several plays from a distance and then did a good job of using his speed and get off to get the offensive tackle to over compensate to the outside before using his hands and change of direction to work back to the QB on his sack. It was definitely a positive performance in my eyes.
Hammond School four-star DT and Gamecocks commit Alex Huntley will compete at the All-American Bowl in San Antonio on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET on NBC.
