This was not surprising to me - they had already reported that Woods was NOT impaired by drugs or alcohol, so with it being a one-car accident unless it was just a case of Woods losing control of his car (it swerved off the asphalt and the grass on the apron pulled the car sideways which can happen), the chance of excessive speed being the main culprit was huge.
Then I read that the accident happened involving a "dead man's" curve, where the road curves sharply and is also associated with a hill or steep decline, which means that part of the road had a history of drivers having accidents there - they fail to see how sharply the road curves on the other side of the hill, and if they are not too careful, they pretty much drive right off the road as they crest the hill.
And THEN read how they analyzed the data on the "black box" of the SUV - they said it reported that the accelerator was applied at 99% at the point of the collision. The accelerator, NOT the brake. So Woods was accelerating to the final speed he was driving at, at the time he struck the tree.
So, Woods STILL could have been speeding past the safe limit when he went out of control, but instead of slowing the SUV down he actually sped it up into the tree......
