Cleveland Baseball Team Changes Nickname

I thought the new name should be the Cleveland Rockers....for obvious reasons.

I’d heard “Rocks” was preferred by a lot of fans, maybe “Rockers” was as well. Would have had a cheesy appeal to it. They just stubbed their toe with “Guardians” by trying to go the symbolic/meaningful route but picking something that apparently nobody in Cleveland cares about.

Just think of all the marketing capabilites with a "Rockers" nickname. A different classic rock band playing during the 7th inning stretch on the weekend, etc..

Yeah. Missed opportunity for sure. Gotta wonder how much money they spent to settle on “Guardians”.

I think that a name carrying a specific tribal reference approved by that tribe would still fly. "Seminoles" is a good example and the depiction is noble. "Indians" comes off as pejorative this day and time.
The story on Cleveland naming their club Indians was in respect to one of their Indian American players a long time ago. So I guess they are disrespecting that effort. They don't even know what they are cancelling.

I understand, but this is now. You know how now is.
The question is whether it is such an honor if no one knows the reason for the name? Prior to them changing the name, I doubt you could find 1 person in 10,000 or more that knew that little tidbit of history....even among Cleveland fans. Heck, it's nice that the name change caused some to go looking for the history behind the name....but it still doesn't justify keeping the name.

I didn't know the history until a couple of days ago. The name was well-intentioned. To be polite, it has become anachronistic. I'm sorry, but it's how things are.

Dumb as hell. Braves are next

I don’t know. For some reason I think “Braves” could stand up against scrutiny. I don’t know why, just a gut feeling. They may have to lose some iconography related to Native Americans, but the name in general isn’t problematic.

The Cherokee Casino is a Braves sponsor so obviously they’re not offended. But who knows. They’ve done away with the tomahawk chop and the chop on signs, but seem to be sticking to their guns on the team name.

Well, I’m a banana slug living in San Jose and I’m proud of San Jose for recognizing us. More teams should have our name (too many Tigers out there - why do they get all the recognition and we don’t?). But this heat is killing us off fast. I feel woozy myself.
