Coach Martin hit the nail on the head

His statement was quite awesome. Between he and Dawn, winters in Columbia are going to be quite spectacular for many years to come.

Just wondering why he and others feel the need to make a statement? Like it matters really what he thinks. Famous people as well as celebrities have little to gain by commenting on controversial matters. They risk alienating a large vocal group no matter which "side" they take. Again, this is a general question and does not necessarily apply to this issue or statement. Just wondering why it matters where he or any "famous" individual personally stands on any issue.

I am amazed at the calls to erase all evidence of the CSA. They said they wanted it moved from the State house grounds. Obviously they want much, much more than that. Remove all monuments to CSA heroes. Next they will want to git rid of the museums as well. How much will be enough? Is there any such thing as enough. Should we give the blacks the whole country and just leave? Would even that make them happy?

Oh you ask a legitimate question but be prepared for the onslaught of the pc police that are going to paint you as a racist. Just saying. How dare you bring up such a legitimate point. Hang on to your hat.

LOL. You're going off the deep end. And it's not just black people that want to get rid of the flag. I'm not black. I am not even liberal.

No, his question is not legitimate. It's a ridiculous line of thought actually.

I'm not sold on Frank. We'll see. It's not difficult to speak about lowering the flag. It's easy to speak about doing the right thing. But, where was he a year ago? If he really felt that way, why not mention it before now? Didn't SOS say something about the flag in 2007?

Dylann, is that you?

I'm probably one of the most conservative on this Board, but this is preposterous. Show me just 1 time an item was removed from a museum. To be sure, a museum is where the flag belongs so that we don't repeat history.

This might qualify as the most ignorant post ever, which is saying a lot.

This is a complete over-reaction. The State House is our state's epicenter and its symbol of sovereignty. No one is asking that the monument be removed. Only the flag.

1. He has to sit in living rooms with kids, many minorities, and talk to their parents about coming to SC to play ball.

2. Other schools have been known to mention the issue in recruiting.

3. He lives in SC and likely cares about the issue.

4. Freedom to speak his mind if he wishes.

5. He is not alienating many people at all with this statement. He likely gained fans.

As a conservative SC citizen, this is the dumbest post of the week.

Before we anoint any of the college coaches with a papal hat, just remember their lifeblood is recruiting. The flag can easily be used against them in that arena. As much as the flag COULD hurt our recruiting here in Cola, I've often wondered how the Clemmers get a pass for the founding of their school and the folks that did it. They all may not believe in the flag yea or nay, but they all had better put up a front to protect recruiting.

The only thing martin has proved is that he can get red faced and throw out the f-bomb. Time will tell.

But few will listen to Clyburn.

After all, he's had ZERO effect on moving the flag and he's been a congressman for years and years.

The legislature isn't listening to him- and won't listen to him. So it's a non issue.

Moving the flag though is common sense- and will be done by the end of the summer.

They surely will seek removal of the monument. In fact, Congressman Clyburn already said the soldier's statue at the monument should be removed to a Confederate cemetery. There already have been calls to remove statues and rename schools and streets.

Imagine how incredible Gregg Marshall's statement could have been. Thanks, I'll be here all week, folks. Remember to tip your bartenders and servers.

Clyburn has absolutely no pull in state legislature. He serves in DC and doesn't have much pull there either.

I find it refreshing to know that there are many level-headed conservatives in S.C. What really speaks about Martin's comments is his take on diversity in S.C. He didn't have to come out and say how much he loved living in a state with so many nice and helpful people in this context. He could have made the same comment Spurrier did about removing "that ridiculous flag." Instead he identified with those that want to preserve whatever heritage they think it preserves (by stating the flag belongs in a museum instead of in front of the capitol building) while also commenting on how the world has moved on - and so has S.C. (at least a largely silent majority until now).

And for those who claim it's a "heritage not hate" thing. The dang thing wasn't even flying above the state house until 1961 - the height of the Civil Rights movement - not during the Civil War. This fact - more than anything else - signifies that it is a relic of the segregationist, white-supremeacist heritage of the South. Don't fool yourself into thinking it has anything to do with honoring dead veterans.

The Confederate legacy should never be forgotten because it's part of our history. It should be represented prominently in our museums - along with EVERYTHING the flag stands for.

I have a proposal Rooster.

Is there is a conspiracy afoot out there among the black population that has a continuing agenda to obliterate all references to the Civil War? If that proves to be true then, I and maybe others on the forum will pledge to join you on the barricades to prevent that.

I doubt that most of us southern born would just stand by and allow memorials that commemorate our soldiers that gave their lives in that misbegotten war to be desecrated, torn down or removed to some hidden place. It is the same for other foolish misadventures of our country like Viet Nam and Iraq, both of which were mistakes, born in ignorance and perpetrated on peoples that were no threat to us. I hope we all honor the sacrifice of those that had little or no choice in going to war. That should be true whether we agree with the wars that took their lives or not.

Clyburn is a national figure and has tremendous influence over the Black Caucus in the state legislature. He is a powerful voice nationally, as he is a regular on national TV and radio shows.

Clyburn is one of the first politicians that the major networks seek out on any race-based issue.

I'm very much on the liberal side of the aisle and I don't think all of the monuments should be removed, though I would like balanced descriptions on things like the Pitchfork Ben Tillman Statue, for example. I hate the thought that schoolchildren and others visiting the State House Grounds could see his statue and think he was a great South Carolinian.

If there is a lower point in the political life of South Carolina than Pitchfork Ben, don't know what it might be. Still, he was supported by enough of the people of South Carolina to become and remain a force in state politics for a long time. Should we condemn those also, or the whole state, and just create a void in history? Like it or not, he and they are our history and we can't do anythng to erase them. The best we can do is to go forward with a better history for the next generations.

A good start is to get rid of the vestiges from that time that separate us. I don't think monuments honoring those who died in war should separate us as long as those monuments don't glorify "The Cause" or whatever excuse the instigators used to convince the populace that a war is necessary and will would lead to a better conclusion than no war. I include "The Domino Theory" as well as "Weapons of Mass Destruction" as such excuses.

We may have differences about which memorials we should keep and which should be discarded but the battle flag simply does not qualify for retention. Yankees certainly don't come off clean from the Civil War but unfortunately winners create the history. They treated the South far, far worse that the USA has ever treated any other defeated enemy with the exception of being complicit to sowing the seeds of WW2 in a defeated Germany.

Its a cruel note that the assassination of Lincoln by Southerns and rejection of his policies by Northern politicians with an axe to grind and pockets to fill were main causes of the indignities we suffered in the "Reconstruction" by yankee carpetbaggers. These things are more responsible for the attitudes of many of today's Southerners than the fact that we lost the war. We only need to look at Germany and Japan today to see the proof of that.

Let South Carolinians together, make a choice to take the damn flag down and move on. If nothing else, it will allow us to face the next challenge with cleaner hands.

Matybe an overreaction, but did you see the article calling for the removal of the images carved into Stone Mountain, GA. or the spray painting on Southern monuments. That and the stores refusing to sell the flags. I mean there is a lot more going on than just moving the one flag to a museum. I am ok with that, it is the other measures that I do not see an end to, that bother me.

Folks can call for whatever the hell they please...it is America after all. But until something actually gets some traction (if anything ever actually was to) then yes some of the reactions I've seen here and elsewhere are definitely overboard, asinine and in some cases overtly racist garbage.

Yup. And NASCAR has stated that they won't allow people to fly the flag on the infield anymore.

I applaud this decision - not because it's a "takeaway" but because it's a signal that people are paying attention to (finally!) to symbols of hatred and division. The battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia is perhaps the most prevalent one in our society. For many people it is as vile as the swastika is to Jews.

Businesses are responsible to the bottom line and if selling these flags hurts their bottom line, they have a business decision to make. It's certainly going to make some people feel uneasy - change always does - but it's about time people are seeing the flag for what it is.

I agree until it starts infringing on someone's right to look like an idiot if they want to.

One thing all of these coaches, ADs, college presidents from cu, usc, and cc have in common. None of them are originally from sc. Martin is married to a black lady...what the heck do you think he's going to say. Nothing to see here move along, move along....

I'll try to say this in the most PC way possible.........elite basketball players tend to be minorities, and minorities tend to be offended by a state sponsored flag that is loaded with racial undertones.
