Several months ago I heard Coach Staley on a national radio show and she briefly mentioned that her next contract could possibly be her last. Now we know last week she signed her new contact.

Of course, coaches say a lot of things when things are in contract negotiations as leverage so anything they say should be taken with a grain of salt. She also said this week she had no plans to coach anywhere else.

I expect that she will be here for longer than this current contract so maybe this is the next to last one she signs here.

I was thinking though of the program after Coach Staley and if at some point she hires someone that would she'd be able to turn the program over to in terms of a head coach. I don't think that person has to be on staff now- and I don't think they are - and wouldn't need to be at this point as Coach Staley has many years left here- maybe even a decade or so.

Jolette Law joining the staff took the program to the next level from a recruiting stand point. If there was anyone on the staff that should get a look its her. She is an elite recruiter.

But Im in no hurry for Coach Staley to leave. She has more than earned the right to say when she is done, I am just going to enjoy having her as our coach until then.

No doubt- I'm just thinking in terms of what Staley might do when she hangs it up way down the road- if it would be better for her to prepare a coach on staff to take over or not

I think Law would be too old for the head job at that point- we are talking about 8-10 years or so from now.

In my mind, I was actually thinking about someone Staley might hire in 4-5 years to prep for the lead job. Just a fun exercise.

Crazy thought- and she'd need experience

A'ja Wilson. Local. WNBA and Olympic champion. Just needs some coaching experience on a staff or two and exposure to recruiting. Only 28. Has at least 5-6 more years in WNBA- minimum.

Big name- would be immediately credible in any recruit's home in the United States, Canada and in many basketball countries internationally.

Great player don’t always equal great coach. We a national power we should not have to hire a rookie coach ever

I specifically said," she'd need coaching experience on a staff or two and exposure to recruiting." That could be as a top assistant or even as a head coach.

However, interestingly enough though, Coach Staley was a rookie coach at Temple right after leaving the WNBA. She took over a program with 10 losing seasons in a row and went 19-11 her first year.

I have no clue in the world if Aja is even interested in coaching. My thoughts were, she'd be a very exciting choice with a little coaching experience coupled with her resume and status in the women's basketball world being able to walk into any women player's home in the world in the next 25 years and having instant credibility that can't be bought.

Understand we shouldn’t have to setting for someone learning how to be a sec coach in WBB

I don't care if their experience is SEC or not. Dawn never had SEC experience until she was here.
Yeah I definitely don’t care if they have South Carolina ties. I want the best available coach. And there is Only one Staley.

Agree.

That's why my first post said "Coach Staley has many years left here- maybe even a decade or so."

But it was still fun to think about what would be next in a good scenario.

In my view, hiring coach so and so won't necessarily be a good thing after Staley. Going after someone with world-wide name recognition in the sport might be a very good option and at that point, someone like an Aja might be a good plan if she's coaching then, doing well, and interested.
