We've had a few of these discussions this fall but it seems like a good time to review. We have a good fix on the big earners and USA Today just gifted us a nice piece on bonus pay.

Clearly, the top dogs (whether they have earned it or not are at the 7.5M and above level. There is a second layer at 5-7 Mil for coaches at big schools. Then 3-5 for newer coaches at large schools, and a bunch of folks below that. (Clearly, Beamer needs a little kick.)

Then there is this. The bonuses for coaches are interesting, especially Jamie Chadwell's. He has a bunch of reasons to raise the level of play down at the beach.

I know it's a pipe dream, but I would like to see heavier incentive-based contracts for guys who haven't yet proven themselves to be among the elite coaches. For a P5 coach, something like a base contract of $2.5m with a $500,000 bonus for every win over 6 and an additional $250,000 (on top of the $500k) for every win over 9. Add in another $250,000 (on top of the $750k) for every win over 11. Set the amounts and the benchmarks commensurate with the _actual_ expectations. If you win 6 games, you're still going to be among the lowest paid coaches in the conference. Win 14 games and you'll be paid at a level similar to the elite coaches in the country.

Instead, it seems like the trend now is to sign a guy a championship-caliber contract and then hopes he proves worthy of it down the road.
