"Bell Is fau football recruitings secret weapon"
BOCA RATON – FAU football lost its most prominent recruiter last week. That doesn't necessarily mean the Owls lost their best recruiter.

Even before FAU announced that running backs coach Roger Harriott had left the team to help with a family matter, Owls coach Charlie Partridge was raving about his secret weapon – defensive backs coach Corey Bell.

FAU's Fab15 recruiting class included only three players from Miami-Dade county, Bell's recruiting territory. Those numbers only begin to tell the story.

That full class included eight defensive backs and Bell played a roll in bringing nearly all of them on board.

“It's been fun for me to watch the relationships he's built with the players down in Dade County and the position players outside of his area as well,” Partridge said. “You can feel that relationship throughout the course of the process, but when you walk into a home near the end of the process you realize how deeply ingrained he is to that family.”

Bell came to FAU in 2014 with strong ties to Miami-Dade County. A combined 13 years of high school head coaching experience sandwiched a stint as the University of Miami's Director of Football Operations.

He believes experience and relationships gained while battling to get players from the competitive Miami-Dade youth leagues to play for him in high school eased the transition to college recruiting.

“You are at that point in high school where you are going out to the little leagues and you have a program, and, of course, you have to somehow sell your program,” Bell said. “In that respect it's an ongoing process in terms of recruiting – even at the high school level.”

Partridge also points to the respect Bell has garnered within the high school coaching community as being a major reason behind his recruiting success.

“He was someone that a lot of the high school community leaned on,” Partridge said. “He was someone that young coaches that got hired in Dade County – they looked to him for guidance.”

Bell's top priority when recruiting a player is building a trusting relationship with the players and their families.

In the days leading up to National Signing Day numerous recruits that ended up signing with the Owls made comments similar to those of Hialeah-Champagnat Catholic's Gerald Robinson.

“Coach Bell, we talk a lot,” Robinson said. “We've got a good bond and that's all I need.”

How is it that Bell is flying under the radar as a recruiter? Unlike many other FAU coaches, Bell is not one to spend much time on social media.

“That's just not Corey,” Partridge explained. “Corey quietly does a great job and doesn't announce it.”

Ironically, the quiet approach employed by Bell helped focus FAU's Signing Day attention in one place – the signing ceremony at Miami-Booker T. Washington. FAU went into the day with one teetering commit, James King, and one they were trying to flip from FIU, Ocie Rose.

The Owls had pretty much resigned themselves to the fact that King was going to flip to Miami. That meant signing Rose could be the difference between a winning feeling on Signing Day and a more melancholy celebration.

“You had some anxiety and some excitement at the same time because you know what you can do with these guys and what they bring to the program,” Bell said. “That countdown, the last 48 hours, it was just one of those moments. ...You didn't show that you were under that type of pressure, but it was there.”

Ultimately FAU lost King but did flip Rose, who was the last commit to fax his paperwork to FAU.

At that point, all the FAU coaches were waiting for the fax that would put the Rose on top of what was already a strong class.

“(Bell) was sitting on the couch,” Partridge said. “I pulled him up, hugged him and said, 'Great job.' I probably gave him a couple friendly kidney shots. It was fun. It was a great celebration. He did a great job of staying the course.”

At points during the offseason Partridge and FAU were fending off suitors for Harriott.

Partridge said he received a few inquiries about Bell, who had recently finished coaching D'Joun Smith, one of the NFL's top DB prospects heading into the 2015 draft, and will have another year with Cre'von LeBlanc – another NFL prospect. None of those conversations progressed much beyond the informational stages.

After this season's signing class, Bell may soon find himself in greater demand.

“It's going to happen,” Partridge said. “It's inevitable because Corey is not only a good coach, he's also a good recruiter.”

Why are we waiting if he's such a hot recruiter?
Most do it out of respect for school their at now.

With only 2 weeks until nsd its not like he can really do anything this year. Plus ellis johnson has been recruiting for us so he would have to stop.

Being where he is, I would have thought he knows some of the people we are recruiting already.

May be a great coach....but as a player I usually called him "matches" because no one else got burned like him.

Hmmmm . . . Looks like things are shaping up very well. Once more, I will add my caveat mantra: keep moving forward, never stop, never give up, never get complacent, work hard and then . . . work harder.

If he has connections to Miami, bring him in!!!! The talent in Miami is astounding, having Bell will open another door to its potential.

I think he would really be a great addition for the final piece of the staff.
