Darrin Horn was your basketball HC, right, but was fired? Smart may hire him as an assistant at Texas. Any good (or bad) stories? Strengths and weaknesses? I understand he liked up-tempo style of play, full-court trapping defense and conditioning.

IMHO hiring horn is not a SMART move for SHAKA to make.

A lot of good assistants aren't cut out to be HCs. What would make you not want him as an assistant?

Not only fired, but already snapped up by Tennessee as their new HC.

Battleship, he's a cancer. If he thinks he's going, he tries to take everyone with him that he can. He's an " it's all about me" kind of guy. Definitely not a team player no matter the cost.

His teams were very undisciplined and there was no accountability for poor decisions. If you like step back, fall away 3 pointers with a hand in the face and 30 seconds on the shot clock then Horn is your man!

Horn was a good young coach that was in over his head at a school like South Carolina with not much tradition in basketball. He would have been better served if he had remained at a smaller school for few years more before jumping into a big conference. My only criticism of Horn was that he inherited a solid class in Devan Downey, Zam Fredrick Jr.,Mike Holmes , Domique Archie and Sam Muldrow but couldn't build off of that talent. When he left USC he encouraged our 2 best players in Anthony Gill and Damontre Harris to transfer thus leaving us with little talent in the post.

It was bad timing for Horn and unfortunately us- his offense was stagnant to say the least. Just no movement at all. The players would just sort of stand there- it was bad. That was a while ago, so maybe he is better now. Most of us get better at what we do over time, and I am sure he has too. But, I cant think of anything good about Horn as our coach during those years...oh, he did dress well, but was real pasty, like he had not seen the sun in a year. Mortician type.

first, half the posters on this thread hammering dh defended him until the bitter end. So, ignore them.

in any event, he can't coach a YMCA team but he can recruit.

As far as I know this will be his first coaching opportunity since he left SC. That says a lot to me. As a head coach, he was great if you like watching players just go out there and play street ball.

If you're referring to his patented "pass the ball around the perimeter until the shot clock runs out, then shoot a rushed and/or contested three" offense or his "f*** it, just foul" defense, then yes, Darrin "One Facial Expression" Horn liked an up-tempo game.

In all seriousness though, he had a chance to be good. Three games into the conference slate his third year was when things started to go down hill. We had just knocked off Florida in Gainesville and beaten Vandy in OT (they were pretty good at the time), but came out and had the hell beat out of us, at home, by Auburn, the worst team in the league. Although nothing was ever said publicly, the impression I got was that something happened in the locker room before that game that caused Horn to completely lose control of the team. He never got it back, we descended into the abyss, and the rest is history.

In my opinion, you could do better, but you could also do worse. I think he'll make a better assistant than HC, but that's just me.

Could be when Mike Holmes got into it with one of the coaches and threatened to stab him. After that Mike Holmes wasn't back on the team.

Maybe, but I wouldn't trust him. It's not just about coaching, the guy had no integrity, and he is a POS, back-stabber. There are plenty of good assistants out there that UT shouldn't lower themselves to that level.

He will get another college coaching job but I think his failures at USC will mak him a better coach and person.

I've been a Gamecock fan for 55 years. I'm split between Bra Scott and DH as to which coach we've had that I dislike the most.

In my opinion the coach that helped and also hurt the basketball program the most was Eddie Fogler.

He will probably be fine as an assistant . Shaka Smart is proven enough to know what he is doing and if he thinks DH can help him I would go with that. Probably will be a good recruiter for Texas if hired.

Can you give examples of some of his worst moves?
His teams got worse year-to-year and from the beginning to end of the season. That's all you need to know.

He is shady. He completely NUKED our program after inheriting a not great but consistently average/ NIT type team.... Then, his last season on his way out after the writing was on the wall he basically convinced his best two young players to transfer just to spite the team that was firing him.

Hey, if that is the kind of coach ya'll want to add, go for it! He is a solid recruiter, well spoken, has a handle on up- tempo offensive basketball, but our defense was questionable under him, he did NOT develop the talent he recruited into better basketball players and he seemed to be just a slick salesman who took advantage of one nice tournament run by the mid-major school he was coaching to land a big time gig... Come to think of it... By that description he is basically a CLONE of Shaka Smart! Seemed great until he GOT a Real job in a tough conference then folded like a paper bag. Should be a great fit!

When your Point Guard is Eric Smith that is recipe for disaster. He didn't even start when he transferred to Coastal.

To this day, Eric Smith is the only Carolina player I have ever booed. Couldn't shoot, couldn't rebound, couldn't pass, couldn't defend, turnover machine. I actually know a girl who went to high school with him, and she says he's pretty full of himself. Why, I can't imagine.

I realize that you mistyped our most worthless football coach's name. But he absolutely does need a BRA!!

If all that is true then why wasn't I recruited to play BB at USC?

I was listening to Heath Cline and Carey Rich about 2 weeks ago and they were talking about Eric Smith. Heath said that Horn had asked him do you think that Eric Smith was a starting point guard in the SEC? Heath said no he didn't think he was a starter in the SEC. Then Carey chimed in and said that Eric Smith was a really good player in the 8th grade but the older he had gotten he never really improved. Which is why Eric Smith went to a prep school to help improve his game. By his senior year Clemson pulled their offer on him. Then Eric calls Horn an committed to South Carolina. Horn's lack of recruiting and player development by far overshadowed his coaching efforts.
