Didn't hear that one, but I did hear Heath Kline correctly put a caller in his place earlier. The caller said something to the effect that the program is "clearly in a state of decline EVERY year since Chad got the job." That's b.s.
Year 1: Got to Super Regional - Lost on the road in Game 3 of Super Regional to a national seed. (Not what I call a bad year)
Year 2: Despite all of the injuries, team was still able to host a regional. Folks don't remember the MASH unite that the team was last year and team still "won anyway" 40 games etc.
This year is a bad year, no question. But if you want to fire a coach for 1 bad year without giving him the chance to address what went wrong (whether it was recruiting, coaching, team chemistry) then you're not allowing a coach to do his job. Heath also brought up that even Calipari (and he is by no means comaring the resume of Holbrook and Calipari) went to the NIT one year with a UK team that everyone thought would be a national seed at the beginning of the year. It does happen.
If you think Year 1 and Year 2 were "periods of decline" then you are just unrealistic about college baseball.
I'm disappointed about this year - perhaps recruting was off for a year or so, or some players just didn't pan out. Heck, now that Chad is HC, I would assume the assistants do more of what he used to do in recruiting. So maybe that's the issue. Maybe there's just no leadership among the players. (Geez, not to single a guy out, but one of our top hitters came up three times vs. PC the other night with 2 runners on each time, and he went 0-3... sometimes players need to step up and play!)
I think Holbrook is doing his best to give some guys chances to work out of slumps, he's tried inserting new guys into lineup etc.... just have to give him a chance to sort it out at the end of the year. We should come to the reality that getting to Omaha is not possible every year.
Go Gamecocks!
