So, here are the 25 members of the 2017 class that have signed a LOI. All in all, yes this is the best class we have signed in a several years but I still worry about the overall quality of the class. Take a look at the offer sheets for all 25 players. The first list is ALL OFFERS. The second list is Power 5 offers.

I think we are moving in the right direction and yes, there are but when you compare these lists to those of the other SEC teams (and yes Clemson) its gonna be a tough road for many years.

Thoughts?

You've certainly watch SCar football over the past 3 years. Player development, followed hopefully by more wins, will lead to better recruiting. The cream of the crop want to play for the cream of the crop, for the most part.

100% agree, I think we woefully underperformed in 2015 and should have been a 6-6 or 5-7 team. I feel we played to our potential last year and finished where I predicted we would 6-6 with a bowl loss. I think that we will improve again this year and I hope for a 7 win season. I am just not seeing a huge improvement with the talent we are bringing in overall.

I still think that a kids offer sheet is one of the best predictors of how well they will perform at the next level. I do see some real playmakers in this years class. MJ Webb is going to be a beast and yes there will be some players that will be diamonds in the rough... But Im just not seeing a class that is going to lift us out of this hole we have been in for the last couple years.

It's an inexact science.

I remember us all crowing about Connor Mitch because he had offers from LSU, Bama, Auburn and FSU. Obviously that didn't turn out so well.

On the flip side you had Connor Shaw who had offers from GT, Wake Forest, West Va, Stanford and ECU. Other than Stanford, those aren't teams that were setting the world on fire back then.

Basically, we have to trust that Muschamp and Co. are good evaluators. We will learn a lot this fall.

I'm not sure an offer list tells you nearly as much as it might seem. There are reasons players might receive or not receive offers. A lot of it has to do with where they camp and how much a coaching staff gets to see them. For instance, Will Register camped at South Carolina, Clemson and Tennessee. That's it. He got legit offers from all those schools and Michigan (not sure how legit). He committed here early in the process, but he's a guy who could have played the game more and probably picked up a bunch of other offers.

That said, it's probably not a great sign if a player doesn't have any other SEC offers. I think some of the biggest reaches in this class are players from the state of South Carolina. Which probably isn't an accident. They are players the coaching staff likely knows will work hard and are excited about being at USC. Also helps develop relationships with the in-state high schools.

I've been pretty critical of Muschamp overall, but even I admit that it's going to take us some baby steps to recruit with the upper half of the SEC. For who we are as a program right now, this is a very solid recruiting class. This is the class we needed this year. In 2017, we need to improve on our 2016 record - win 8 games, with or without a bowl win (in a better bowl). Then, our 2018 class should be a little better than this class, and so on. It's kind of a chicken-egg situation.

Some coaches win more games than their talent should allow. Some coaches are able to recruit better than their team's record should allow. Fortunately, Muschamp's recruiting reputation appears to have paid off for us in this recruiting cycle. Now, if we can just overperform on the field this year.

One other note about the SEC. We've had top 10 recruiting classes before. And that usually put about 4th - 6th in the SEC. I'm not too alarmed about the lack of SEC offers in this class. By my count, we have 11 players in this class who had the opportunity to play for one or both of the last two national champions. That's not bad for a team that has a sub .500 record over the last 3 years and coming off a losing season.

We've had a lot of 4 star guys in our previous recruiting classes not pan out. And by "a lot" I mean nearly all of them. Player development is just as important as the number of stars a kid has out of high school.

We should not be counting on most of these guys contributing immediately. A few of the might, but we're in trouble if we're counting on true Freshman to come in and provide immediate assistance. We should be hoping for development of the players already on our roster. Recruiting is usually a two year plan. The 2017 recruits should be completely developed and ready to become starters after 2 seasons in the system. Of course there are always exceptions. The staff was forced to play so many Freshman last season due to the failings of our previous staff, including recruiting and development of talent.

Not talking about stars necessarily, talking more of offers that were dispensed by teams after evaluating a recruits talents on the field. I venture to say that a better player will have more offers from quality teams than a "diamond in the rough."

Our commits only had 51 other offers from other SEC schools!!

Take out Williams, Webb, Douglas and Nixon and the other 21 players only had 25 offers!!

Here are the offers our commits received from other schools by school:

Alabama - 6
Arkansas - 1
Auburn - 3
Florida - 3
Georgia - 4
Kentucky - 5
LSU - 1
Mississippi State - 7
Missouri - 4
Ole Miss - 3
Tennessee - 9
Texas A&M
Vanderbilt - 4

Are you really going to do this over and over again?
What exactly is your point? What are you trying g to accomplish by starting these type threads over and over again? Are you hoping that someone will agree with you and confirm your belief that this is an awful class of recruits? First you pick apart their star ratings, then you dissect their offer lists. What's next, height and weight? 40 yard dash times?

Just digging through the #s in a way that most people don't when trying to compare our offer lists to the teams we one day hope to beat.

The notion that ones class is better than another based on the rivals final rankings is crap when you look at a team like Stanford who has 11 fewer recruits than we do but is only 23 points behind us.

There is quality and then there is quantity. We need to compete for and WIN the recruiting battles for that will be able to compete in the SEC. If not, I fear that the 7-8 win ceiling is the new norm for us.

Thats all.

I believe our staff's ability to develop players will make or break us. I agree that class rankings are subjective and exaggerated.

I was really only looking at the SEC, if you look at the first list you will see Clemson only offered 7 of our players.

Jackson, Douglas, Webb, O. Smith, Register, S. Smith, Williams

Not sure how many of these were commit-able offers.

Your list is incomplete. Not that it matters, but there are glaring omissions like the fact that Javon Kinlaw decided today between us and SoCal, but there is no mention of him having an offer from them.

Davonne Bowman runs a 10.6 100 per Kornblut.
He has Melvin Ingram size. I'm no guru, but that fact alone makes me think he will play this year. Special teams at least, and that is a need.

Player development has been an issue also. We have had some STUD TE's over the years that we never really seemed to utilize. D. Byrd with his amazing speed that we never capitalized on. A player like Nunez that was great in the open field we couldn't find a way to get him in the game.
I remember when bama had Richardson and Ingram on kickoff returns at the same time. Find a way to field players with game changing ability.

Yep. For example, Kinlaw offered by the other USC..........many more such cases

There was a 6'8" wr here for a couple of years during the Spurrier era. Never did anything with him. Might have had hands of stone for all I know.

But I bet you I could very likely get an opposing team to call a timeout in a hurry if I put him on the field in a goal line situation.

Geez a guy like that could be unstoppable catching the fade in that situation. Even if he had bad hands you just about force a team to double cover him, just because the average db is giving up 9 or 10 inches.

Maybe he doesn't have the speed to be an every down player, but you got him for free (guy was a walkon) and never tried to think outside the box with him?

Junior would have to break a sweat to coach him....that just wasn't going to happen.

Yes....the laziness of the whole previous staff still pisses me off.
