Feel like some of the fun days of college football have come to an end as it’s all business these days. There were some colorful coaches back in the day…many who have passed on. Who are some old coaches you thing about? Who did you enjoy watching? Who was underrated? Who was overrated?

I always liked Ralph Friedgen. He had Maryland very competitive during his tenure. He was a big part of the O’Leary teams at Georgia Tech, which were also fun to watch. On a side note, Friedgen also dressed his team in a college football uniform instead of that circus stuff Maryland wears now.

Just mentioned O’Leary above. GT might have been the most exciting team to watch in his tenure there. Have to wonder what might have been if he never took that Norte Dame job. Interestingly enough, he was the name I always heard we would’ve gotten had Lou Holtz not accepted the job. Wonder if we would’ve found the resume lie or overlooked. Could you imagine the fallout if we hired another GT coach only to never coach another game? O’Leary proved he could coach at UCF as well. I think Norte Dame would’ve been better with him than without him, especially early on. And had he never taken the job, I think Georgia Tech would’ve won a few ACC Titles under him at worst.

Another, and it seems like an ACC Theme, is Chuck Amato. I wouldn’t say he was great…or even good. But I find it odd that so many look back on his era and think he was a joke. I guess Philip Rivers will make anyone look good, but NC State was better then than they have been recently.

The dumb thing was, at that point in his career, the information he had fabricated in his resume was irrelevant as to his qualifications. It would be like a university professor with 10 years of experience applying for tenure and lying about his high school achievements on his resume.

Chuck Amato looks like a guy who should be running a business in Las Vagas...

Jimmy Johnson.
The guy could flat out coach championship caliber teams and did it at every level.
My favorite quote from JJ

"Treat a person as he is, and he will remain as he is. Treat a person as if he were where he could be and should be, and he will become what he could be and should be."

Here’s one I thought was TERRIBLE. Gerry DiNardo. Sucked at Vanderbilt and LSU. He was at LSU when we got our win in Baton Rouge…go figure.

I watched a Brad Scott-led Gamecocks team battle a Gerry DiNardo-led LSU team to an invigorating tie in Williams-Brice. Ugh what a game 😂 😴

Didn't Tanneyhill set all kinds of records the night we beat them in Baton Rouge? IIRC, that game wasn't even televised. Had to listen to it and don't think I ever saw a highlight from that game.

Interesting side note about Friedgen…I had an Under Armour rep tell me one time that Friedgen wore a 5x shirt, but had UA to put nothing bigger than a 2x on the tags (UA was founded by a Maryland grad). Don’t know if he was being serious or not, but I have no reason to believe he was tell a lie. The rep thought it was funny.

It was Blake Williamson. He caught the winning TD on a trick play in the end zone. Tanneyhill threw for about 500 against Mississippi State.

I may be biased but watching Joe Morrison walk the gamecock sidelines with a cigarette cupped in his hand. During August practices he would wear a black jacket and tell the players it wasn’t hot out here. At an open practice prior to a game against the tarhills I noticed he was glaring at me behind those sunglasses. I suddenly realized I was wearing a powder blue knit shirt. I kind of slinked quietly off the field.

Yep, Tanneyhill was the QB in that game. As you said people remember Blake Williamson in that game because he came in and caught a halfback pass from Brandon Bennett. But Tanneyhill started and finished that game. He didn’t set records though. It was a rainy night and we won 18-17.

You are also correct about the Mississippi State game. I believe that was the following year. We had an offense but couldn’t stop anybody. The following year was also when we tied LSU at home.

Well… Spurrier was one of the most entertaining to ever do it and do it at a Super high level! I miss him being our coach. That was part of my excitement in the Beamer hire- he comes from that old school coaching family tree and worked with SOS… He may not be the “character” Spurrier is, but he has tons of enthusiasm and a confident air about him that I think will be fun if he can back it up with success!

That era of NC State is always a big "what if" to me. What if Rivers and that offensive group from 2002 and '03 had come along a couple of years later, or Mario Williams and that defensive group from 2004 and '05 had come along a couple of years earlier. In short what if the two sides had been playing at the high level they played at in those years but had reached their respective peaks at the same time together?

I actually found a copy of the '94 game on youtube:

Jimmy Johnson mentioned in his autobiography that in his early years of coaching,he was on the staff of Frank Howard at Clemson. He said that he and Howard were standing in the shower and he felt something warm coming over his leg He looked up and saw Frank laughing because he was peeing on Jimmy.
