1. The importance of summer camp season

South Carolina kicks off its Will Muschamp summer camp series Thursday morning with the first of 10 days of workouts when high school players will work out for the Gamecock coaches in Columbia.

• With the spring evaluation period now over, summer camp season is the next step for the recruiting cycle and the Gamecocks will host thousands of players on their campus this June. Some of those prospects are high schoolers who simply covet the chance to learn from a college staff, while others will potentially earn an offer from the Gamecocks while on campus.

• Prospects who are on campus will go through NFL Combine style testing in the morning as the coaches record measurables like height, weight and hand sizes plus 40-yard-dashes, shuttle times and vertical jumps. In the afternoon, prospects will separate out into positions for skills work followed by 1-on-1 matchups to complete the camp, which runs from about 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

• Muschamp puts an added importance on evaluating prospects in a camp setting and prefers for all of the prospects he signs to have worked out in camp at some point. Nearly all of South Carolina's 2019 signing class camped in Columbia.

Muschamp went in-depth about the importance of in-person camp evaluations during the Spurs Up Tour this spring:

"Getting them on campus and getting in that situation in that setting, I think is really important, because the player-coach relationship is a two-way street. They may walk off our campus and go, 'There ain't no way I want to get coached by this guy,' and that's fine. Go somewhere else. I worry about the ones we sign, not the ones we don't.

"Or they may come in and say, 'I really like the way they [coach].' Because I tell our (assistant coaches), 'Coach exactly the way you're going to coach our players,' because I don't want a guy walking in the door and saying, 'Wow, I didn't know it was going to be like this.' They're going to understand exactly what they're getting when they get to our place."

2. 8️⃣6️⃣ Countdown to kickoff: 86 days!

Our countdown to South Carolina's 2019 season opener against North Carolina in Charlotte is now down to just 86 days and today we're featuring redshirt sophomore wide receiver Chad Terrell, who hopes to break into the rotation this season after dealing with a knee injury last year.

A former four-star prospect, according to Rivals.com, Terrell played in 10 games as a true freshman in 2017 and caught three passes for 20 yards. A spring practice knee injury in March of 2018 slowed Terrell's progress, forcing him to miss all but four games of last season.

Now fully healthy, Terrell hopes to enter the wide receiver rotation this season at one of the outside receiver spots where he could lock down a second-team role.

3. ⚾ MLB Draft

The MLB Draft ended Wednesday night and the Gamecocks had their fair share of players, both current and signees, picked.

As a rule, players picked in the first 10 rounds are likely to sign with their respective teams while college players drafted after the 10th round will have a decision to make.

That directly applies to guys like Luke Berryhill and Reid Morgan, who will have to chose between going pro or coming back next season. Berryhill is a rising redshirt junior and has some leverage while Morgan will lose the majority of his bargaining power if he comes back for his senior season.

Below is the full list of draftees.

Current players

Luke Berryhill (Reds): 13th round, No. 384

5. This Date in Gamecock History

June 6, 2003 – USC opened up a border war super regional by edging North Carolina, 5-4, behind Michael Campbell's two-run single in the fourth inning and strong pitching from David Marchbanks and Chris Hernandez.

  • UNC scored first, but a two-run homer from Gamecock catcher Landon Powell put USC in the lead 2-1 but the Tar Heels would reclaim the lead 4-2 in the top of the second.
  • Those would be the last runs Marchbanks allowed in his six innings on the mound.
  • An RBI single from Powell scored Justin Harris in the third to make it 4-3 and Kevin Melillo and Nick Gardner opened the fourth with singles to set the stage for Campbell.
  • A bunt by Jon Coutlangus moved the two runners to second and third, then Campbell laced a single to center to bring both home and take the lead for good.
  • Hernandez took the mound in the seventh and blanked UNC on just one hit over the next three innings to record a save.

6. Birthdays!

Noah Campbell - Campbell's father Darrin played at UNC with current USC coach Mark Kingston and spent several years in the White Sox and Orioles organizations, reaching the Triple-A level. Noah committed to the Gamecocks over Miami, UNC and Vanderbilt, and chose to enroll at Carolina over signing with the Milwaukee Brewers, who drafted him in the 19th round. Campbell made 42 starts as a true freshman, starting games at 2B, DH and LF. He spent much of the year in the leadoff spot and twice in 2018 led off the game with a home run (Texas A&M, Florida). After a big summer in the Cape Cod League, much was expected of Campbell in 2019 - he was named second-team All-America in the preseason by Baseball America and the No. 10 prospect for the 2020 draft by D1baseball.com. 2019 turned out to be a struggle for Campbell, who hit .239 on the year and saw his on-base percentage drop 50 points. A bounce-back year in 2020 would be huge for the Gamecocks.
