This must be the smartest player ever...

In 2000, the Mets agreed to buy out the remaining $5.9 million on Bonilla's contract.

However, instead of paying Bonilla the $5.9 million at the time, the Mets agreed to make annual payments of nearly $1.2 million for 25 years starting July 1, 2011, including a negotiated 8% interest.

At the time, Mets ownership was invested in a Bernie Madoff account that promised double-digit returns, and the Mets were poised to make a significant profit if the Madoff account delivered -- but that did not work out. LaughingLaughingLaughingjumpingsmile

I read an article where, while this day is celebrated, there are multiple players that are paid in a similar structure and that the move actually worked out well for the Mets. They got Mike Hampton with the $ they saved, though he didn’t stay long. But Hampton was key in helping them make the World Series.

The reason Bonilla is such a big deal is that his first tenure with the Mets was a disaster. He then moved on to the Florida Marlins and then the Mets brought him back. The fans were pissed and he barely played at all.

They started the season in the dumps after MLB moved the All-star game to someone where-else. Why play well? The fix is in against the Braves...
The Braves don't have an owner that doesn't give a rip about the Braves . Mets has one worth 14.1 Billion dollars Braves spent zero money on there bullpen this year .

As a Mets fan I cringe on this day but Bruce Sutter’s contract seems far worse for the Braves. They are still paying him until next year with a $9.1 million ballon payment also due next year. Almost $50 million in deferred money. Awesome retirement plan if you can get it.
