Jeff Monken, has turned around Army's football fortunes. Army had lost to Navy 14 straight years. Now Army has beaten Navy 4 out of the past 5 years. Monken has led them to two 10+ win seasons, including a Top 20 finish. And they are 8-2 this year. Who knows???? Maybe the Beamer hire will work out (NOTE: I was against the hire).

Maybe this is a good sign.

That 14 win streak for Navy is misleading. It wasn’t just that they were better at coaching.

USMA really struggled with recruiting athletes while the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were raging. Four years of football meant an almost guaranteed trip to a combat zone.

Now that the wars have died down, it’s been a much easier sell for high school kids.

Prior to Monken, Army last won 8 games in 1996 and, prior to that, in 1988. They have now won at least 8 games in 4 of Monken's 7 seasons there. Supposedly, Beamer is a very good recruiter. I guess I'm saying that maybe, just maybe, Caslen has an eye, for very good coaching talent. Thus, maybe Beamer will turn out to be a good coaching talent, as well as having the recruiting chops. One can hope.

It wasn’t just that, Navy and Air Force had different weight requirements for players than that Army had. They had to get the secretary of the Army to change it. I think they finally changed about 4 years ago.

From what I understand, in addition to being involved in the hiring process, Caslen helped level the playing field as far as academics. Previously, Air Force and Navy had different admission standards for athletes than it did for the regular student population, while Army/West Point did not have the lower standards for athletes. Once that happened (and they hired a good coach) it was easier to get kids in to West Point to play that used to not be able to get in.

That's really not uncommon among regular NCAA schools where athletes can get in under NCAA minimums whereas regular students may have to meet stricter academic standards.

I am truly entertained by some of the folks that actually think the only offense Monken can run is the triple option. At GSU, those folks will melt down if some version of it. At Army? Its a military academy. Just like all of the others, they have no choice with their recruiting limitations. He is an excellent coach. But if he got a job where he could be on a level recruiting playing field, he would adjust easily to what wins at that level.
