Help settle this debate

I can't believe I have to clue anyone in on the fact that Valentine's Day is on Feb 14th and Christmas is on Dec 25th, but here we are.
You obviously didn’t understand the post. Die Hard was set on Christmas Eve. Obviously I know what you meant. But saying Feb 14 and not saying Valentine’s Day settings are different things. Die Hard didn’t just “happen” on December 24th. It was extremely Christmas Themed.

No, there is no Christmas theme, only a Christmas setting. It is a typical Bruce Willis action film that could have been placed in any setting while not appreciably changing the movie. It could have taken place on Independence Day and been the same movie.

Ridiculous. Lots of Christmas music. Christmas decorations. Christmas storyline. What the hell do consider a Christmas theme if Die Hard doesn’t have one?

Dude writes, “Now I have a machine gun. Ho! Ho! Ho!” How’s that working for Independence Day? You don’t think you could take Christmas vacation and put it during the summer and say the same thing? It’s the music, the lights, and the fact they make it set during Christmas. Die Hard does that.

Hell, It’s a Wonderful Life isn’t even set during Christmas other than the last 5-10 minutes.

Try harder. Just do better. Your argument doesn’t hold up.

You're confusing setting with theme. A theme is an overall message that is trying to be conveyed through the film. "It's a wonderful life" has a very clear Christmas theme. What Christmas theme is Die Hard trying to convey? The birth of Christ is the real reason for the season? It is better to give than to receive? No, there is no Christmas theme in the movie. It's just a "kill the bad guys" movie like all other action movies of this type 365 days of the year. It just happens to take place at Christmas time.

Not only are Die Hard Christmas sweaters a big selling item and available in many styles. Amazon even has the illustrated holiday classic book for sale -

My daughter and I debate each year this question. I am sure has been on here before but here goes:
Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?
I say yes she says no
Your daughter is correct and a recent poll confirms her opinion. It's not about Christmas - the takeover of the tower just happened to occur in late December.

Depends on what one considers to be a Christmas movie. Theme? Setting? Both?

Well put, JGH 35.
