It's been a busy few weeks for a few Gamecock targets and we just wanted to give a quick update on which schools are showing interest in some of the Gamecocks' biggest 2021 and 2022 targets.
Wake Forest, which just hired Steve Forbes and BJ McKie as an assistant, came into South Carolina and offered the three big targets in the next two classes in Cesare Edwards, John Butler Jr. and Julian Phillips. McKie obviously has ties to the state and all three of those guys are high-major talent worthy of being recruited by Wake Forest and other SEC/ACC schools.
Whether Wake remains a player in their recruitments still remains to be seen but it would make sense for Forbes to try and come into the state looking for talent.
--As for Edwards, he's also picked up an offer from Florida State and another from Providence. Edwards is still in the earlier stages of the process and will have more schools knocking on his door as things progress.
Right now he doesn't have a timeline in order, but the Gamecocks should be in it for a while. They've been in pretty constant contact with him. Chuck Martin's been recruiting him for a while dating back to their recruitment of Trae Hannibal. He's also having the coaching staffs from Kansas and North Carolina asking about him as well.
He's still a little raw but his ceiling is very, very high and could see his recruitment blow up if there's a live period this summer/fall. This was our most recent update on Edwards from a few weeks ago.
--Butler picked up an offer from Vanderbilt while Phillips picked one up from Ole Miss along with Wake as well.
Both guys are ones South Carolina's recruiting pretty hard and we're hoping to get more updates on them as well this week. Phillips has a chance to be one of the best players in the country and the Gamecocks have also been recruiting him since his freshman season and have tried to get in early with him. They've done a good job building a relationship with his family as well as his recruitment gets ready to really take off as he gets into his junior season.
--We reported on it last week but wanted to put it in a content item for you guys instead of a quick thread, but Jacobi Wright went on the record with us last week about him gearing up for his commitment soon.
He'll commit sometime in June or early July, looking more like the end of the month right now. We've logged in a FutureCast pick for South Carolina. Bruce Shingler has done a really good job developing a relationship with his family and the Gamecocks are just a little over an hour from his parents. They've been recruiting him for close to a year now and he's from the same high school that Jalyn McCreary played at as a senior.
The two have actually started to build a relationship with Wright getting information about the program from him.
