Tanner didn’t chew hitters asses during an at bat. He would generally talk to em and settle em down. Hitting well comes with a level of comfort, not being jacked up.
Actually a Gamecock player during the Tanner years told me that when Ray would call time and talk to a hitter during an ab, the conversation actually went something like “hey how are your classes going?”, or “how are things with you and your girlfriend ?”. Just his way of calming the hitter down
