Inside the commitment: Bryce Lindsay

South Carolina picked up their biggest remaining target on their 2022 board today in shooting guard Bryce Lindsay, who announced his decision Friday afternoon.

He picked the Gamecocks coming off an official visit to Columbia last week and also took visits to Oklahoma State and Pittsburgh.

In terms of his recruitment, it was a quick and expedited process that ended in him committing to South Carolina with just about three or so weeks of ramped-up recruiting.

The Gamecocks really started to move quickly after seeing Lindsay playing in the Chick-Fil-A Classic where he shot 41 percent (43.3 percent from three).

As soon as South Carolina began showing interest, he and his family immediately wanted to get down to campus for an official visit, which happened Jan. 19-20 sandwiched in between South Carolina’s games against Arkansas and Georgia.

The visit went well and he was able to spend a lot of time with South Carolina’s staff and team to watch practice and see how he could potentially fit into the program.

He built a very good relationship with Will Bailey in the recruitment process. Bailey served as Lindsay’s lead recruiter and the two really got along well and Bailey did a good job in recruiting him.

Frank Martin and Lindsay’s head coach at St. Frances in Maryland are close and there is a relationship there, which obviously helps as well.

Lindsay and his family are fans of Martin and it goes back to his recruitment of Michael Beasley and Rodney McGruder. Both of those guys played for Martin at Kansas State and are from Maryland so there’s some familiarity there.

They’ve kept up with Martin since then.

As for what Lindsay brings to the Gamecocks as part of the 2022 class, the first and foremost thing is scoring and the ability to shoot the ball.

He is a knack for scoring, putting up 30 points and a game-winning three coming off his official visit. He also had 41 points in a game as well earlier this season.

St. Frances is considered a top 25 program nationally and Lindsay is one of their best players.

He pairs well with the rest of the Gamecocks’ 2022 signees with Zach Davis the team’s point guard and really good passer and defensive-minded wing Daniel Hankins-Sanford.

What’s next for South Carolina in the 2022 class in terms of any potential additions is quiet right now.

The Gamecocks only have two players who are exhausting eligibility after this season in James Reese and AJ Wilson, which means if everyone who can come back does then they’ll be one over the scholarship limit with Davis, Hankins-Sanford and now Lindsay

Obviously the Gamecocks have three other scholarship players in their fourth seasons—Erik Stevenson, Jermaine Couisnard (redshirt junior) and Keyshawn Bryant—who could opt to forgo the extra COVID year and move on with their careers.

Any of those three do, plus any attrition after the season from transfers, would free up scholarships as well.

The Gamecocks could then opt to move on a 2022 (or 2023 reclassification player) in the high school ranks or continue to mine the transfer portal like they did this offseason.
