They did the scrimmage a little different today instead of a traditional game. They threw five pitchers with each guy getting five batters and then they'd put guys in different situations throughout an inning (runners on, etc.).
The scrimmage started late and ended early because of lightning, so not a whole heck of a lot to report.
--Cam Tringali threw one inning had his best velocity of the fall so far. He was in the low-90s and touched 93 a few times in his outing. Was throwing some really good breaking stuff in the low-80s, mostly changeups. He also throws a slider but didn't see much of it today.
He'd pick up two strikeouts in the inning against Bryant Bowen and Josiah Sightler, both swinging and both on breaking balls it looks like. He'd also field his position well, handling a slow roller in front of the plate and firing to first. He's athletic and can field his position well.
--Tringali was bailed out on a fly out in the first inning thanks to a really nice diving catch in left from Andrew Eyster. It's the second diving grab he's made this fall and looks improved defensively. He's played a lot of left field this fall and looks good doing it. He also had a two-run double roped down the left field line near the end of the scrimmage as well, 78.1 mph off the bat but hit hard enough to make it past the third baseman.
--Will McGregor also threw Friday afternoon and wasn’t as good as his first outing. He had two wild pitches and an errant pickoff to first base that scored a run. He'd give up two hard-hit balls (including a home run) and walked Brennan Milone. He was touching 88 mph on his fastball and had a breaking ball in the mid-70s. The final batter of his inning, Jonah Beamon, flew out to right but it was a really hard-hit ball at 97 mph off the bat.
--The home run was by the hands of Brady Allen, who continues to have a really good fall. He's picked up a few base hits and just looks more poised at the plate. Reviews I've gotten from him have been nothing but good and he seems to be progressing pretty well as they get deeper into the fall. Sunday against NC State will be a good barometer of where he is right now.
--Dallas Beaver continues to look like the real deal in his fall as a grad transfer, notching another base hit in his lone plate appearance (off McGregor). He'd bounce a single through the right side at 91.3 mph off the bat. Fellow grad transfer Bryant Bowen racked up a hit as well, a well-squared-up ball at 102.9 mph off the bat. He looks just as mature as Beaver at the plate.
--Noah Campbell picked up another base hit, at least his fourth of the fall, at 92 mph off the bat. He looks a lot more comfortable at the plate and is really playing to his game which is contact and speed and is doing those things well.
--Josiah Sightler was the last pitcher to throw before the lightning came. He was up in the low 80s on his fastball and in the high-70s on his changeup. He'd give up three hits—Bowen and Campbell singles and the Eyster double—but struck out Wes Clarke and George Callil, both on breaking balls.
--I haven't written about him much and he hasn't done a whole lot with the bat the first week or so, but Noah Myers is twitchy as all get out and can really move on the bases. He took third on a wild pitch, getting in easily, before scoring on McGregor's errant pickoff move.
Team will scrimmage again Sunday up at NC State. First pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. and admission's free.
