Recruiting Tidbits

There were many years in the not so distant past that Bamberg (S.C.) Bamberg-Ehrhardt defensive end Justin Henderson would already have an offer from Carolina. It hasn’t happened yet because they coaches feel good about the defensive ends on campus and those that will arrive this summer and are in a position to be more selective than in recent years. With that said the Gamecocks will take a close look at him this spring, and Henderson is expected to attend Steve Spurrier’s camp this summer, which will give him a chance to show the coaches what he’s capable of up close.

Team Tidbits

Not that is any huge revelation, but I hear Stephon Gilmore has blown the coaches away with how quickly he’s adjusted to everything since arriving at Carolina in January. His physical tools are even better than they thought, and their expectations were already high. He is more than ready from a physical standpoint and doesn’t look anything like a true freshman. He’s going to play a ton of snaps this season.

DeVonte Holloman has made a similar transition from a mental standpoint and has picked up the system quickly. He doesn’t have the same kind of shear physical gifts that Gilmore is blessed with, but Holloman is also going to play an important role this season. His development could end up being the key to moving Darian Stewart back to Spur, which is the position where he’ll be the most productive.

The key for Jarvis Giles is for him to have a great offseason in the weight room so he’s physically prepared to carry the kind of load the coaches would like to give him this season. He had some issues with fumbling during spring drills and was too easy to bring down at times. If he gets his body where it needs to be he has a chance to really make his presence felt in 2009.

The general consensus within the program is that the coaches need to find more players like Gilmore, Holloman and Giles. They all three are impressive on and off the field and have all the qualities you often find on winning teams.
