Bit of a shorter edition today, but wanted to roll out some updates from the trail...
South Carolina defensive line coach Lance Thompson has seen several defensive line commitments and targets this week during the NCAA-allowed contact period, and also checked in on several junior prospects in the state of North Carolina.
As I previously documented, Thompson and running backs coach Bobby Bentley saw Rick Sandidge earlier in the week. Six total contacts are allowed per prospect during the contact period, with each program’s head coach being allowed one. Sandidge is now expected to take an official visit to USC at some point, as our last report indicated.
On Thursday night, Thompson met up with defensive line commitment Kingsley “JJ” Enagbare out of Georgia. Notre Dame has continually pursued Enagbare, a nice recruiting get for the Gamecocks over in-state Georgia and others, and at one time an official visit looked to be in the works. That has not happened and all indications are that Enagbare is completely solid to the Gamecocks. Earlier in the day, Thompson met up with junior college commitment Jabari Ellis.
Thompson visited a couple names South Carolina continues to track along the defensive line this week as well. Florida’s Dennis Briggs, who’s been an in-state lean for much of the process, is one that Thompson checked in on this week. Pennsylvania’s Christian Barmore is a four-star prospect that has blown up in terms of offer list lately, with the Gamecocks also extending one. Both remain on the board as prospects USC is keeping an eye on going forward. As we know, space is very limited in the class as currently composed.
Thompson will swing by TL Hanna High in the Upstate later today to check in on 2019 in-state defensive end Zacch Pickens.
Defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson made his way to Mississippi on Wednesday and met up with junior college defensive back target Saivion Smith. Muschamp, as far as we know, still has his one allotted visit available in Smith’s case. We’d still peg Alabama as the most likely landing spot for Smith, but the Gamecocks continue to work there.
Muschamp and Bobby Bentley were in Florida on Thursday night and had visits with running back commitments Deshaun Fenwick and Lavonte Valentine. We caught up with Fenwick, who’s fairly elusive in terms of media, and he offered up that he’s still 100 percent committed to the Gamecocks. His plan is to sign with USC in December and enroll early in January.
Wes Mitchell has certainly been all over the situation with recent Florida State decommitment Israel Mukuamu. To add just a bit more color there, I’ve spoken with a couple sources recently about his game and how he could fit in should the Gamecocks follow through with landing him. One person who knows defensive backs and worked with Mukuamu during his high school days in has frequently raved about his upside, saying he’s “one of a kind.” I can also tell you that the Gamecock staff believes there’s a chance that Mukuamu could actually play cornerback in Will Muschamp’s defensive scheme.
