Recruiting tidbits
Steve Spurrier and Robert Gillepsie’s visit with four-star running back Jarvis Giles went very well last night. Giles is saying the right things to the Gamecock coaches. Tennessee’s coaches will be in there today and you never know what can happen, but I feel good about Carolina’s chances based on what I’m hearing. His announcement will be Tuesday at around Noon.
Spurrier and Gillespie also met with running back/athlete Lindsey Lamar, and I he is now more open to attending the same school with Giles if it works out that way. Carolina’s coaches are selling him on the utility role as a player who could line up at receiver or running back and also help as a kick/punt returner. He’ll be in Columbia next weekend and a commitment is not out of the question if it goes well enough. We’ll have a Lamar story on the front page later this morning.
Southern Cal rolled out the red carpet for four-star wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey over the weekend on his official visit and he’s more committed to them now than he has been since the summer. However, he’s going to visit Carolina on January 17th and is still listening to what Shane Beamer has to say. Former five-star receiver Vidal Hazleton announced earlier this week that he is transferring from Southern Cal. With him being from the East Coast, this gives Carolina some ammunition in trying to convince Jeffrey that staying close to him is the more prudent answer.
There is a slight chance Spurrier could choose to sign a quarterback in this class after all now that Tommy Beecher won’t be returning next season. He’ll only do it if he finds the right guy, something that may be difficult to do this late in the process.
Team Information
Several Gamecock players, almost all from the defensive side of the ball, are going to file their papers with the NFL Advisory Committee to see where they project to be drafted. Most of them are going to get such a grade where it makes much more sense for them to return to school for another season. How many of them will be mature enough to do the smart thing remains to be seen.
