We realize that many are itching for substantive updates on two prospects currently committed to Tennessee in defensive lineman Dorian Gerald and cornerback Jaycee Horn following USC’s fifth win of the season, which happened to come over the Volunteers.
Yet, keep in mind that there are still some dominoes that could need to fall before the situations can be properly assessed. Butch Jones’ status in Knoxville is rocky at best, and both prospects are more than aware of that situation. Both Gerald and Horn have kept in contact, consistently, with South Carolina. Let’s see what happens in Knoxville – and when – and then the pieces will start to fall into place.
Horn opted to take a trip to Tuscaloosa to see Alabama defeat Arkansas instead of heading to Knoxville back on Saturday. He still has a slate of official visits available, and one of those is expected to go to South Carolina at some point. We’d still count Will Muschamp and his staff as the one with the best shot of ultimately pulling a flip here. Gerald is someone still on the staff’s board as well, and someone we’re still monitoring as a staff at GamecockCentral.com. USC has several defensive lineman that it’s still communicating with at this point.
We reached out to several underclass prospects from the state of Tennessee, ones that carry offers from the Gamecocks, to gauge their reactions on USC’s win over the Volunteers in Knoxville on Saturday.
2019’s Ani Izuchukwu is a very physically impressive prospect that camped at USC this summer and worked out at the BUCK position with assistant Mike Peterson. Izuchukwu did not catch the game on Saturday, but still recalls his time over the summer in Columbia fondly. He’s planning on being back in Williams-Brice Stadium for USC’s match up with Vanderbilt on October 28. As Rivals.com’s Woody Wommack recently documented, South Carolina is in the four-star prospect’s top three along with Alabama and Ohio State.
2020 offensive lineman Jake Wray said: “South Carolina played a gritty game and went into Knoxville and came out with a big win.” Wray, the brother of 2018 offensive line commitment Max Wray, is looking at “possibly” making a trip to Columbia in the future. As you’d imagine, his older brother’s pledge to Ohio State would ostensibly put the Buckeyes in the driver’s seat.
2019 Nashville athlete Jashon Watkins also weighed in on the victory for USC: “I got a chance to watch the game and I feel it was a game that came down to the end. It was a good fight by both teams. The coaches (at USC) want to get me down on campus as soon as possible.”
2019 linebacker Jackson Hannah had some interesting comments regarding USC’s win: “I loved it. Tennessee hasn’t given me a chance but South Carolina has. I’m just happy they put them in their place.”
2019 defensive back Wesley Walker had the following to say: “I knew it would be close. Both teams can compete at a high level. They (USC’s coaches) have been showing me love. I like that they recruit me as a safety. They’re one of the few schools that are doing that.”
2020 offensive lineman Ray Curry, a prospect USC offered very early in the process, said this about the Gamecocks’ Saturday performance: “I wasn’t shocked about the outcome of the game. Tennessee had solid ‘D’ but they didn’t execute like they should have on offense and South Carolina wouldn’t let up on them. Their offensive line also had a good performance which really helped them win.”
