To begin with the storyline that must be addressed, substantial news dropped on Tuesday when 2022 quarterback Gunner Stockton backed away from his pledge to South Carolina.
Not many are as plugged into Stockton’s recruitment as Rivals.com’s Chad Simmons, and he rolled out some fresh information on where things stand with Stockton on Tuesday.
Our subscribers will notice that there’s not much mention of South Carolina in terms of the Gamecocks’ chances to get Stockton back on board. Auburn and Georgia – the program Stockton committed to Carolina over formerly – are the two main programs to watch.
Of course, Shane Beamer, Marcus Satterfield, and Connor Shaw will continue to pursue Stockton, and the latter individual has a close relationship with Stockton. It’s important to keep in mind that two of the coaches that were instrumental in recruiting Stockton in Mike Bobo and Will Muschamp are no longer on staff, and that’s led to a decreased comfort level for Stockton even with Shaw not on staff. Shaw would not be Stockton’s primary coach – either OC or QB coach in Columbia.
There are some indications, according to Simmons, that Stockton could render another decision soon if he’s ready. For Carolina, it will be all about trying to prolong the process.
One quarterback prospect we’re going to now be tracking closely in the ’22 class is Suwanee (Georgia) Collins Hill’s Sam Horn.
The four-star’s recruitment has picked up more stream throughout the season as he helped lead his squad to an appearance in the state title game, passing for over 3,900 yards and 41 touchdowns along the way.
South Carolina has not offered to date – other 2022 quarterback offers were made by the previous staff and prior to Stockton’s original commitment – but Horn did take note that offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield followed him on Twitter.
Arkansas, FSU, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan State, Tennessee, Virginia, and numerous others have extended offers to Horn.
One of Justin Stepp’s most recent offers is to Fayetteville (Arkansas) athlete Isaac Sategna, a 2022 wide receiver prospect who also excels in track and field.
Sategna’s father, Mario, is an assistant with the Arkansas Razorbacks’ track and field program. The younger Sategna is actually a standout in multiple events including the 100, 200, and 400 meter dashes, plus the 110 and 300 hurdles and the long jump; it’s a rarity to have that broad a resume for track athletes. Sategna broke a 17-year old school record in the hurdles as a high school freshman.
Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Colorado, FSU, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Penn State, Southern Cal, and Tennessee have also taken note of Sategna’s talents on the gridiron in extending offers.
