We gave subscribers the latest on USC quarterback commitment Ryan Hilinski on Tuesday, straight from him…
Those that were concerned about some of Hilinski’s recent comments had to feel reassured after his interview with GamecockCentral.com, which took place after a conversation with Will Muschamp.
We mentioned in the last edition the notion of how coaches have to swing big to hit big. That was certainly the case in landing Hilinski, a “perfect storm” scenario for the Gamecocks in which the staff was able to land one of the country’s top quarterback prospects. What that also means is that when you have quality prospects on your commitment list, other schools will continue to offer and continue to recruit. That’s been the case with several Gamecock pledges, most notably Hilinski.
The future four-star had one or two offers at this same point last year, and it’s flattering to have your list explode to include some of the teams now on his list. Yet Hilinski has said it would be difficult to pull him away from the Gamecocks and that remains the case.
Our most recent information, up until the past several days, seemed to indicate that the Gamecocks probably would not have another signal-caller to pair with Hilinski for various reasons. It does seem to be a possibility, but not a certainty. The offer to Michigan State commitment Dwan Mathis, as well as any others that could happen in the future, should be seen as placeholders to get a closer look at some guys in camp. Someone as frank as Hilinski, we’re inclined to believe when he says he is fine with another quarterback in the class, should it come to that. We’ll see if it does.
When asked how the door could crack for other programs, Hilinski noted it would likely only be a communication breakdown with the staff, mentioning Muschamp specifically. With the Supreme Court striking down the federal ban on sports gambling, it seems like an appropriate analogy: we wouldn’t bet on it.
USC has already had ample activity on the quarterback recruiting front for the 2020 class as well…
There’s another name to watch in the 2020 class who could be making his way to Columbia this summer for a visit.
Kentucky product Beau Allen, who has offers in hand from Kentucky and Michigan, recently told the network that South Carolina is on his short list of programs to hit this summer. Quarterbacks coach Dan Werner has connections across the country, and we have seen guys from multiple states profess interest in getting a closer look at USC.
We continue to track one in-state DB prospect, and have found out another from Virginia will be camping this summer…
Westwood’s Cam Smith picked up a pair of notable offers yesterday as North Carolina and Tennessee stepped forward with Power 5 tenders. As we have said, the Gamecock staff has been keeping an eye on Smith and hopes to continue learning more. He’s a 6-foot-1 DB with some physicality and ball skills, which means he’s someone we’ll continue to watch into camp season.
Cameron Allen out of Virginia seems he’s on the cusp of picking up more Power 5 offers, with Virginia Tech showing a good deal of interest lately. He’ll be at South Carolina for camp on June 16 and has had communication with the Gamecock staff, that wants to verify his size and get a look at him up close during a camp session.
A four-star Florida athlete is a possibility for a Gamecock visit in the future as well…
Rivals100 member Marc Antony-Richards is someone that the staff likes and believes could play wide receiver in the Gamecock offense. Antony-Richards is listed as an athlete and could play running back or wideout at the next level.
The 6-foot-1, 187-pounder’s next two visits will be two Alabama and Auburn, but he has a list of other programs he wants to see in the coming months. South Carolina is in that group, along with Oregon, Georgia, and Tennessee.
