Recruiting tidbits
Steve Spurrier and Robert Gillespie will meet with running backs Jarvis Giles and Lindsey Lamar later today. I am still hearing that those two will not sign with the same school, but Carolina isn’t going to give up on them until one is officially in the boat. Lamar is scheduled to visit next weekend, and Giles is set to announce in the next week or two. I still believe Carolina is his leader.
Four-star running back commitment Ben Axon has some academic hurdles to overcome, and Gillespie met with him yesterday to get a closer look at what he needs to accomplish to qualify. If it appears insurmountable for him, don’t be surprised if Carolina re-engages with a guy like Dontae Aycock and places Axon in prep school or junior college. They’re in a position at running back where they have to make sure they sign one big back and one speed back who will qualify.
I am more optimistic today than I was yesterday that four-star offensive lineman Johnnie Farms will take an official visit to Columbia, likely next weekend.
As mentioned Wednesday, four-star WR Alshon Jeffrey has set an official visit with Carolina on January 17th and will visit Tennessee on January 24th.
Coaching Talk
With the Woody McCorvey deal falling apart, I am now hearing Spurrier has given more thought to how he wants to handle offensive staff. Another scenario he’s contemplating is keeping Steve Spurrier Jr. at wide receivers, hiring a young tight ends coach, and having Ray Rychleski focus solely on special teams. Spurrier would then handle the quarterbacks by himself, which I think would be a positive move for all involved.
Keep in mind just because Spurrier announced he wasn’t going to name any new coaches until after the New Year doesn’t mean he can’t reach a deal with a candidate behind the scenes.
Bowl Talk
The one wildcard in the bowl scenario is if the Capital One folks decide to select Ole Miss. If that happened, it would create a complete mess in the SEC and there would be no telling where Carolina could end up. But as long as two SEC teams end up in the BCS and Georgia is selected by the Capital One, then I expect the Gamecocks to end up in Tampa.
