Recruiting Tidbits
Carolina will play host to three official visitors this weekend. Headlining the list is St. Matthews (S.C.) Calhoun County four-star wide receiver Alshon Jeffery. According to a source close to him, he’s coming into the trip with an open mind and is truly undecided about who he’ll sign with on Wednesday. Look for Chris Payne and Damario Jeffery to make their way to campus to spend some time with Jeffery, and for the early enrollees to also be heavily involved in entertaining him.
Jacksonville (Fla.) Fletcher four-star wide receiver and the latest Gamecock commitment Lamar Scruggs will also be making his official visit this weekend after pledging to Spurrier and Spurrier Jr. during an in-home visit on Tuesday.
The final visitor will be Tampa (Fla.) Wharton quarterback Andrew Clifford. Carolina has not yet offered him a scholarship. If they choose not to do so, the coaches are likely to discuss a preferred walk-on scenario where the 6-foot-4, 205-pounder would have every opportunity to earn a scholarship once on campus.
Spurrier has visited the schools of many of the top juniors on Carolina’s board during his January travels, something that should pay dividends down the line. Head coaches can no longer go on the road during the May Evaluation Period, so that makes these visits even more important. One such school Spurrier visited yesterday was Berkeley High, home of 2010 speedster Bruce Ellington.
All signs still point to Fork Union (Va.) four-star defensive end Ronald Byrd enrolling at Carolina in June.
Clemson, Oklahoma, and Georgia Tech followed Carolina in offering Bamberg (S.C.) Bamberg-Ehrhardt 2010 lineman A.J. Cann. Lorenzo Ward and Shane Beamer were at Cann’s school yesterday, and I hear Dabo Swinney is expected to make an appearance today. The Gamecock staff is very high on Cann’s potential as a center.
