Insider Report - September 23rd
With the start of a new football season, GamecockCentral.com is happy to announce a new feature: The Insider Report. Check back each weekday during the season for a new edition.
For continuity reasons, if you have question regarding this report, please use today’s “Ask Tony" thread on The Insiders Forum.
Recruiting tidbits
Here is the up to date information on Carolina's commitments who were injured recently:
Linebacker Matt Coffee has a torn ACL and is out for the year. I haven’t confirmed whether he’s already had the surgery or if it’s forthcoming.
Athlete Damario Jeffery has also been diagnosed with a torn ACL and is scheduled to have season ending surgery today at 1:30 PM. Up until last night he was contemplating getting a second opinion, delaying the surgery and playing through the pain, but he decided against it.
Typical recovery time for an ACL injury is in the eight month range, but some heal faster/slower than that.
Safety Chris Payne broke his ankle and is very likely out for the season. However, if his rehab goes well enough he could be back in time to play in one of the national all-star games. He is a strong candidate to replace Jeffery in the Under Armour game since Jeffery can't play in it.
Carolina offered one of the top juniors in Georgia recently, and I hope to reach him tonight for an interview.
Team Information
C.C. Whitlock has been moved to cornerback and Akeem Auguste has been moved to free safety to replace Chris Hail, who has been moved to receiver.
Wide receiver Jason Barnes is going to get every opportunity this week in practice to show he’s ready for increased workload in games.
Brian Maddox will likely start at running back this week, but he and Eric Baker are expected to receive a similar number of carries. If one gets the hot hand, there could be a discrepancy. Otherwise, their responsibilities should be pretty similar.
Terrence Campbell will likely get the call at right guard with Heath Batchelor sitting out this game for missing classes over the summer. Jordin Lindsey has been suspended for the same reason, and Clifton Geathers will likely make his first career start as a result.
