Insider Report September 9th
With the start of a new football season, GamecockCentral.com is happy to announce a new feature: The Insider Report. Check back each weekday during the season for a new edition.
For continuity reasons, if you have question regarding this report, please use today’s “Ask Tony" thread on The Insiders Forum.
Recruiting tidbits
Greensboro (N.C.) Northern Guilford 2010 athlete Keenan Allen picked up an offer from Carolina late last week. He projects as one of the top players in the Tar Heel State for next year and also has early offers from Alabama, Clemson, Wake Forest and Duke.
One loss like the one to Vanderbilt rarely has an impact on a team’s overall recruiting, but it’s very important that Carolina bounces back and plays well against Georgia this weekend. A win would be ideal, obviously, but I think they need to at the very least have a strong showing on both sides of the ball.
The commitment of St. Matthews (S.C.) Calhoun County athlete David Sims to Kentucky doesn’t help Carolina in their quest to turn his close friend and teammate Alshon Jeffrey their way. Neither does the struggles of the offense in the first two games. A major turnaround on that side of the ball is going to be necessary, in my opinion.
Columbus (Ga.) Carver offensive lineman Chris Hubbard is a new name on the radar and a player Carolina could become a bigger factor with over the course of the season.
Team Information
The young wide receivers and running backs who haven’t played much in the first two games are getting increased reps this week in practice. The ones who perform best in practice will get their chances in the game this weekend.
It’s now looking more likely that Jamon Meredith will take over at left tackle instead of at left guard.
I’ll be shocked if Jasper Brinkley doesn’t have a much more productive game this weekend against his home state Georgia Bulldogs. He played very well in the previous two match ups between these two teams and I don’t expect this weekend to be any different.
Whether Kenny McKinley plays this week is going to depend on how his hamstring responds to the treatment he’s receiving. They’re doing everything they can to get him ready, obviously, but it’s still a little too soon to gauge whether his hamstring is going to come around.
