*** Columbia (South Carolina) Hammond's Jordan Burch was bumped to five-star status by Rivals.com on Tuesday, checking at at number 13 overall in the 2020 Rivals100 rankings.

*** Burch, who's not likely to render a decision until this summer at the minimum, has been the subject of an intense recruiting battle between Clemson and South Carolina within the state.

Some of what will be mentioned in this space will sound like a refresher on where things stand, but bears repeating given the substantial interest in Burch's recruitment. We are well aware of the fact that some folks, whether tied to Clemson or within the recruiting industry, are of the opinion that the Tigers lead. Just as in some past instances, what we hear or feel on a situation may not always match up with others.

The only thing that we feel completely comfortable reporting is that, according to our information, Burch has not rendered a choice privately nor is he close to doing so. And in fact, there are reasons that either of the two programs seriously vying for his services could feel encouraged by their standing. In other words, South Carolina has done quality work in Burch's recruitment as well and appears to have just as good a shot when the time does come for the final call to be made.

Both programs landed visits in January, and Burch captured an offer from Alabama in conjunction with a visit to Tuscaloosa over the weekend.

As has been illustrated numerous times, both in USC's favor or in ones that have gone against the Gamecocks, recruiting is not always black and white. Xavier Thomas was South Carolina's to lose - until he wasn't and committed to Clemson. Many observers could not fathom the fact that Anderson native Zacch Pickens could possibly spurn Clemson (and UGA, for that matter) and head to South Carolina. Yet it happened, and Clemson was pretty much out of that race for at least a couple months when the Tigers thought they were still in it.

In short, there's a ways to go with this one. Will Muschamp's built a quality rapport with Burch and his family. Clemson has its selling points as well. We'll all just have to continue to wait to how things play out over the coming weeks and months.

We'll be there to break down any happenings along the way.
