I had never heard of this cat. Googled him and listened to close to a minute before I had to turn it off. I admit that I am old and not exactly hip with the times but how anyone calls this musical talent, I dont get. That is not to say that there are not a handful of rappers that I like or that I think have talent. I play several instruments and years ago, a few rapper friends of mine would hang out when the band I was playing with at the time would practice and in some instances, there is definitely a talent to good rap. Those guys would go back and forth and ad lib incredibly, much the same way guitar players would go back and forth and ad lib. That being said, there are probably about 5-6 rap artists that I think are truly talented. The rest of them all sound the same, playing the same boring drum solo and oftentimes, rather than being true word poets, just throw out curses and slang and insults to each other. Thank god, my 3 daughters prefer The Cure and Journey and Led Zep to rap and hip-hop because if I had to hear this crap playing in the background for long, I would need to be institutionalized.

I will say being a musician as well when you hear a true “Lyricists” (not Rapper) at their best it’s like comparing Jimi Hendrix to Taylor Swift as guitarist . We have an original hip hop group in our local market and they are AMAZINGLY talented . Like you said , we’ve let them jump up in the middle of a funk jam and these guys can freestyle FOREVER , In time and on pitch . Yeah listen to rap today is depressing. Guys like KRS One , Nas , Biggie , Chuck D etc etc were true musicians . I feel the same way about modern Rap as I do Modern Bro Country ….. it’s f$&&$&g garbage . Unfortunately 90% of the record buying public doesn’t agree I guess.

Like we were young and understood Biggie and Nas, these kids feel guys like Lil Uzi Vert and Playboi Carti. Trust me, I have a 16 year old and have tried to expose him to 2Pac, Biggie, and Rakim. They call it old school and, for the most part, they don't like it. They are into this digital, sing-songy, auto-tune based rap. They don't care about lyrics. The main comment you will get from a young kid is "It's not what he says, it's how he says it". Just face it. We are all getting old. Think of how the older people felt in the 1980's when rap really popped off. My Dad called it a fad. Now, in his 80's, he admits "I guess it wasn't". Whether we like it or not, music trends are driven by the young. It constantly morphs and changes, and at some point, you just get too old to understand it.

So true my friend . I guess your right . Here’s what’s sad …. A guy like Biggie would never have gotten a record deal in today’s industry. Same with Willie Nelson or Waylon Jennings in country . To a record exec it’s has little to do with talent and more to do with what that can sale to the public . It’s sad . Thank god my 18 was brought up around music and other musicians so she’s listens to Pink Floyd , Zepplin , Al Green , Earth Wind and Fire , Fleetwood Mac because she recognizes what good music is . What’s cool is me being an old fart she’s turned me on to so many great new artist I would never listen to .. Cosmo Pyke , Rainbow Kitten Surprise , Childish Gambino , Mac Miller , H.E.R etc etc etc . Im afraid true Hip hop is a dying art . Even when you hear guys like Snoop and the old school guys talk about it they can’t get it . I just can’t listen to KRS one and then listen to lil’ Yachti or Uzi and not roll my eyes .

You can bring a kid up around any type of music. That doesn't mean they are going to like it. Many kids, I have two kids just like this, look at what the older generation did wrong, and pick at it. They appreciate their father and the older generation, but they like to get their little digs in too. My daughter: Why did you guys in the 90's walk around in Timberland boots and it wasn't even cold. My son: Old school basketball players always jumped as high as they could on their jumpers, that's why they weren't accurate. So, you are always going to get that push and pull between the young and the old. Also, there will be certain artists that have talent and only get their foot in the door by creating a persona or gimmick. For example, Lil Uzi can actually rap. If you go back to his mixtape days, "Purple Tape, etc.. He was rapping as well as any traditional late 80's or 90's rapper. No one cared until he created this persona that you see now. So, many times it's not about the artists. It's about the people and what they want. These kids grew up on the sing-songy rap style of Kanye from the 808s and Heartbreak Album. They are now teenagers and in going off to college and that's what their sound palette asks for.

I don't know why some of y'all are so concerned that he's rich or what he spends his money on. If he's paying his taxes, who cares?

I'm not sure what surprises me more, that somebody would embed a $24 million dollar stone in their forehead or that this guy actually has fans.
If you have teenage kids, you better check their playlists. Somebody like Lil Uzi Vert is probably on it a lot. This dude has a huge following and has been on the Forbes list for entertainers dating back to at least 2018.

I didnt say I doubted it, just that I was surprised.

Looks like a guy that just went a few rounds with Mike Tyson. What an idiot.

By the way, add me to the list of those that have never heard of him.

Interesting posts here. I have to be in a rap mood, which is maybe once every 3-4 months. Find myself listening more and more to a Christian rapper named LeCrae and to certain tracks by the conservative white cat with the braids, Tom MacDonald. He has a handful of really great songs going after the woke crowd but everything else is just kind of meh. I used to love 2Pac and have multiple cd's of his but the older I have gotten, I find myself listening less and less to the rap that has 200 f bombs in 1 track and I would NEVER let any of my 3 daughters listen to that while they are under 18 because I do everything in my power to keep their innocence for as long as possible. (BTW - I am not saying rappers are the only ones whose words are harmful - just the most obvious.) Call me an old fuddy duddy but that is part of the problem with our society. 18th century Scottish writer and politician Andrew Fletcher wrote "Let me make the songs of a nation and I care not who makes its laws." While I am not at all for censorship, it would be nice if any of these "artists" ever thought for 1 second how what they write affect kids that idolize them across the country. And you can call me an old fart all you want, but music and film and tv DEFINITELY changes society and its views and the musicians and actors and directors and film makers are all very well aware of this.

Never heard of him and probably will not again.

happy that my youngest likes Marty Raybon.
