In Dan Klores' 1980 book "Roundball Culture", he talks about Roche dribbling over near the UNC bench telling Smith to "sit down" & saying stuff like "your tie is crooked"
I have been friends with John Roche for a while and he confirms the story about cussing out Dean Smith after beating them at UNC. He said he apologized to Smith years later. John said he hated the Tar Heels as a player. He also said he played with a chip on his shoulder as did the rest of the team. He can still remember every key play of every game from then. He is always surprised how much people still remember those years here..

Dean Smith was a great BB coach and teacher but he could be a little lordly sometime. He often thought it his duty to instruct the officials on how to call the games. This led to some confrontations with ACC coaches, other than McGuire, of course. The Gamecock sweep of the Tobacco Road "big four" rests in memory as the best part of that great team. Coach K eventually confronted the refs on behalf of the Blue Devils and the rest is history.
