I learned this in the days before the internet (well technically the internet protocol existed, but most email went by way of Bitnet and Marc Andreeson wasn't even at Illinois quite yet) from a prominent professor there as he toured me around the campus: William T. Sherman was the school's first head/superintendent.
It's a cool school, just in shockingly bad shape. Years of good oil prices and they didn't do much except improve the stadium. That's a result of several GOP governors, same thing that cut funding to the SC universities. LSU is actually one of the few athletic departments that plan a healthy surplus for transfer to the general fund. Clemson, USC, Alabama, et. al. incidentally transfer money but plan for a balanced budget in the AD.
