Neither wrote it. And Coe recorded it first.Yes . Actually didn’t Davjd Allen Coe write it and George Jones recorded first ?? I might be wrong . Honestly since it’s a cover anyway I don’t see why Chris didn’t just cover the Etta James tune . It’s VERY obvious he was influenced by it . The key is the same , the tempo is the same , the vocal phrasing is the same , even the guitar fills at the beginning are almost identical.
Misreading my own link.Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove wrote it. And it was originally recorded by David Allen Coe.
American singer-songwriter Chris Stapleton recorded an R&B-influenced cover of the song for his debut studio album Traveller released in 2015.[11] Stapleton first sang his version on the spur of the moment while the band were playing during a soundcheck before a show in Charlottesville, Virginia. Stapleton and the band enjoyed playing the song, and he decided to sing the song every show.[12] The song's melody is an almost note for note rendition of Etta James's song "I'd Rather Go Blind."[13][14] His producer Dave Cobb heard the song and suggested that he should record the song for his album.[15] His cover was never officially released to radio as a single, but it was released as a promotional CD single.[16]
Seems like others have noticed as well
Misreading my own link.
But yeah @BobbyBReloaded1975, it says on that Wikipedia link Stapleton and his producer acknowledge it's a note for note rendition of Etta James's song.

stop with the facts……wonder if our astute posters know the recording industry as well? I mean they know football coaching, they are all great at what they do, know how to run an athletic department, etc. Wonder if they know people pay for the rights to use a portion of, or re-record stuff daily. The song writers (or publishers) make a killing off stuff like this. It’s only when done illegally do they care. Do you think Warren Zevon and Lynyrd Skynyd are complaining about the money from Kid Rock’s “All Summer Long” rendition?
And what’s Ironic is they are super upset with Greta van fleet.I LOVE LOVE Zeppelin but they were NOTORIOUS for doing this especially on the early records . Willy Dixon sued them multiple times and won . “Lemon Song” is a Howlin’ Wolf song called “Killing Floor”. The Stones , the Yardbirds , Cream , etc etc all covered old blues tunes but they acknowledged the original artists . Zep was notorious for stealing old blues tunes and not crediting . I still love them but that’s pretty screwed up .
Link? Kinda beat up if so because yeah, Zeppelin borrowed from othersAnd what’s Ironic is they are super upset with Greta van fleet.

It’s a interview I’ll have to try to find it.Link? Kinda beat up if so because yeah, Zeppelin borrowed from others
Zeppelin also denied they copied anything as well.Well there’s a story behind that . At first Page and Plant really liked them and were very complementary. Well when Greta Van Fleet did the big Rolling Stone interview when asked about Zeppelin they said they were not that heavily influenced by them and kind of laughed off comparisons . That’s when things went south . C’mon you guys are a straight Zeppelin ripoff , just acknowledge it and wear it like a badge of honor . When they started out in Detroit they were a straight Zeppelin cover band . Just own it . That’s what rubbed Robert Plant the wrong way . They were big fans of GVF until the interview came out as was I . They say they aren’t influenced by Zeppelin but they dress just like them , the drummer rips off every Bonzo fill he can and the singer is obviously trying to be Plant . Just freaking own it . It’s not a bad thing .
FIFYevery song written has some similarities to an older song. Either the words or music used.
I had a friend tell me a while back he had no respect for Whitesnake because so much of their music sounds like Zeppelin. I asked him if he realized that Zeppelin was sued for two songs by a bluesman who won. There's nothing new under the sun.I LOVE LOVE Zeppelin but they were NOTORIOUS for doing this especially on the early records . Willy Dixon sued them multiple times and won . “Lemon Song” is a Howlin’ Wolf song called “Killing Floor”. Didn't Rick Hall give the permission for it to be used. I'm pretty sure he owned all the Music that the Swampers made. I know he produced all the hits that was recorded in muscle shoals. I'm about postive he gave permission.Misreading my own link.

I don’t see the point of this. Stapleton has always acknowledged the music is from the Etta James song, it’s not like he’s tried to hide it. It’s a cover song and the music is from a different song. There’s probably a lot of people who bought Etta James songs on iTunes who’d never heard of her before Stapleton made this song.
As for Led Zep being ripoff artists, they absolutely are. But they’re also pretty cool about not being a-holes when people rip them off. I’ve never heard of Led Zep suing anybody. And if you don’t think they get ripped off, listen to Pearl Jam’s “Given to Fly” and Led Zep’s “Going to California”. Zep could’ve them to the cleaners.
Zeppelin also denied they copied anything as well.
Rod Stewart did a great cover of “I’d Rather Go Blind.”
If I could say this about that.....Tertian harmony (western music) is the music we mostly listen to. Rock is based on the blues and it is all based on the Modal Theory. Now there is a lot more to this of course but rock and country is based on 1, 4, 5 chords. I play a lot of music from rock, country and christian genres and there are only so many ways a song can be constructed. You would be surprised to now how many amazing songs have only three cords in them. There are countless songs that are literally identical in the number of cords played, the order thy are played in and the same drum pattern. Every one is influenced by what they listen too and use it in their own way. Writers do the same thing. Stephen King says he reads so he can learn and literally take ideas from other writers. Like it was said above, when it is stolen it is obvious and should be acknowledged. Which is why EVERYONE should give credit to Elvis.
