NIL story

Story out that Georgia and Ohio State were in bidding war for a 5 star player...

OSU NIL deal could only offer $500k per season and UGA NIL deal was $800k per season with a $1.8M signing bonus...

Good job NCAA allowing this sh!t...
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that college athletes could profit off their NIL in addition to their athletic scholarships. The NCAA had no choice but to let it happen. Try to control it and they will of course be labeled as a racist organization. They claim that the previous scholarship system was simply a contract of physical servitude. The whole thing makes college athletics a sham. If I was on the Board of Trustees at a college I would eliminate all college athletics and get back to being an academic organization. This crap is only going to get worse, and those contributing to NIL organizations will only be required to reach deeper and deeper into their pockets. I’d rather send my money to Samaritan’s Purse.

The NCAA has pretty much given up. The Supreme Court in NCAA v. Alston allowed this and the NCAA allowed the case to get to the Supreme Court. Litigation malpractice of the worst kind. Since they lost NIL, they just aren't even trying anymore. They were not all that good when they were trying.

The high-end NIL "contracts" that elite players get coming out of high school are better than what 4th-7th round NFL players make (<-- data from 2020).

At least the NCAA could keep the rule that you must sit out a year if you transfer. That would help some, maybe. Also, there should be strong penalties for a school if it is proven they contacted an athlete before they entered the portal.

Unless major changes are made to the Portal & N.I.L., we will see the end of college football as we used to know it. Folks can stick their heads in the sand, as deep as they want but, the truth is, It's already minor league professional football and it's never going back. I have never seen anyone walk away, leaving money on the table and there is just too much greed to believe anyone is not going to try and get some of the action.

When is the last time you heard of a player becoming ineligible due to poor grades? Sure, maybe 1 or two in the past 10 years but, the term Student/Athlete is already a farce.

Dont just blame the NCAA. Blame all the activists who begged for this crap. Its just pro football now. And I hate pro football. 20 years ago that UGA vs Ohio St battle would’ve been won mostly by which team the kid liked more as he grew up or which offered the degree he wants. Now its just which fans can throw the most cash at him

Im predicting that the players will eventually sue the NCAA for the 4 yr eligibility rule. They’ll want unlimited eligibility, so that as long as they are enrolled in a school, they can play. Guys will be 32 years old working on their 5th masters degree, all bc the NIL pays every player $50,000 a year plus their scholarship room and board.

Honestly how could a judge rule against that? Because some old men at the NCAA decades ago decided 4 yrs is all?

Agree, it's a disaster However, it's largely the fault of the NCAA. They had many years to push though some level of compensation to the athletes and chose to protect their constituents. If they had established a baseline for compensation, the courts wouldn't have been handcuffed with an all-or-nothing decision. Hopefully it gets reversed as the absurdities grow larger by the day. Even if/when it does, it will take time to unwind imbalances created during this point in history.

I starting to miss the days where a freshman had to participate on freshman teams. Maybe that would promote a little more loyalty

Why doesn't the NCAA-NFL just start allowing players to jump immediately to the NFL if a team wants to take a gamble on them? That would be an answer to the free market/free will argument. Then the NCAA could implement a reasonable salary system for everyone else.

Historically because no 18/19 yr old would ever be physically ready for the NFL. However the NFL has softened their league so absurdly w rules, now they probably could

Agree. It just seems like a good workaround to the athlete having to go through college to get to the NFL. If you free them up from high school, then it's a choice and their freewill. If you're good enough, you can bounce to the big leagues. You otherwise work yourself up the ladder. College would operate just like any corporation. We will compensate you a reasonable amount for your services. The CEO (University in this case) then gets the remainder of profits. That's life in a capitalistic society. There's now no argument to be made by the woke crowd.

The best thing that could happen right now is for Alabama and the other top schools to come together and announce that they are aren't going to pay players beyond a reasonable (equal) amount and make it all transparent.

That would be in everyone's best interests. Otherwise, Bama is going to be paying their QBs outrageous money while the rest of the players stew. Class envy is destructive at every level.

The bigger traditional programs have no interest in leveling the playing field with everyone else.

The incentive is that core college football interest will collapse and they know it. No one wants to watch the best team money can buy win championships. Also, as noted above, the players within these teams will likely revolt. No one wants to block for the multi-million dollar man.

The "best team money can buy" makes me think of the dumpster fire Texas A&M is right now. That school has more oil money to throw around than any other I know of. Yet, they are coached by a buffoon and the kids see it and are now jumping ship. Last I saw they had 22 players in the portal. They cashed their NIL checks and are like cya...pretty funny if you ask me.

I posted long ago that this would happen and suggested that the nfl should just start minor league football and leave the STUDENT ATHLETES alone! Only about 2% of college players go to the nfl so why do the 98% have to be subjected to the whims of the ELITES?? I would probably not watch the nfl semi's any more than I do the nfl - which is NEVER since kapadink! BUT, I WOULD continue to watch young men playing for their love of their sport and schools!

They were ordered to stop by the Supreme Court. They had to give up.

Why not make a rule that NIL deals can only be discussed with ENROLLED STUDENT Athletes???
Not allowed by the Supreme Court ruling. NIL is supposedly non-University money wanting to give royalties for use of a player's likeness. Non-students would sue if the NCAA tried that.

Make a rule? Haha…rules do not have to be followed when no consequences. Also, can’t be enforced unless each recruit has a guardian angel.
